You've got that right, Margaret! We have been very fortunate with Tori thus

far...but I know these hellholes exist...and many of our kids are stuck

attending them, these caregivers/teachers/districts/etc. need to learn the

People First thing..

Hi all, this is a sensitive subject for me as well.  I worry so much about Noah,

because he has been getting more aggressive lately and so far I have been the

target.  He has one incident so far that has been documented at school, but I

called them on it and I havent had any issues since.  I definantly agree that

schools want money and could give a d$ & % about the student as a person.  I can

almost guarantee that more than half of Noah's issues stem from the fact that he

cannot get the teacher/aide to understand what he is trying to say, I certainly

would get frustrated.  If the staff would just get to know the child and trully

learn to care for them and treat them with respect rather than a check, maybe

most of these issues would not arise.  I know my child is difficult, I will be

the first one to tell you that, but he is my child, and when I was working with

the district, that was my " motto " of sorts.  I always reminded myself, " This is

someone's

child. "   I dont know, I hope I dont sound too harsh, but this is a touchy,

scary area for me.  Leilani

<<Children With Disabilities Arrested For Behavior>>

Hi, Everyone.... you know what's the scary part? It is that these were

school related incidences. Teachers are suppose to follow IEP's, that are

suppose to have BP's for kids that need them, and they are suppose to prevent

these

sorts of incidences. There are just some schools/teachers/ districts out

there that just don't' give a d@# & about the student. Our % for bad schools was

1/6 concerning G's schools..... that is an awful high number if it represents

the schools across America!!! The bad districts just want the gov'ts $$$ and

could care less about the kids. We had the *privilege* of living in such a

district and, as many of you already know, Gareth was *charged* at the age of

7 for kicking his aide in the shin ---even though there was no mark of proof

that he did it. It is scary....like Holly said....what' s going to happen to

the 1/150 when they reach the teenage yrs? Sorry for the

anger......personal subject here!!!

Take care, Everyone.

Margaret

Leilani: I work in the school district and I know the great majority of us who

work in the SPED dept. DO treat the kids as if they were our own. Again, there

are others who shouldn't be working with people-period end. When I see

something that is not quite right, I point it out...and follow up with it. I

would hope others would do that for all of our kids, but know they don't. I

feel we are the kids' advocates while working with them, and I, as a parent,

expect that of the staff working with my child. I will call someone on

something if I don't think things are being handled properly. Perhaps you can

say I may be too nosey, but I feel it is my job as a " mandated reporter " to put

my 2 cents in when I think it is necessary.

Miss Liz:  I too worked with my district within the Sped dept until last year

when I had my youngest son, and I wish there were more people like you, but

unfortunatly, there isnt.  The teacher I worked with last year was a firm

believer in advocating for her students, guess what, her contract was not

renewed.  She was so upset and we could not figure out why other than the fact

that she asked for outside help when administration wouldnt help her with issues

in teh classroom.  Unfortunately, in my present situation, I dont think that the

aide  he is with right now is being very patient with him, what she doesnt

realize is that I have eyes and ears with in the school and I will almost ALWAYS

find out.  The teacher is real good about telling me what she thinks I want to

hear, but Im pretty fluent in " bullshit " because that is what Ive been given for

years, I can read between the lines.  I hope I didn;t offend anyone, and I didnt

mean to generalize, I

was mainly speaking of my own experience.  Leilani

Hi Leilani,

I also subbed at a school for children with autism. Some of the staff were great

and others should have been fired. You have good and bad in all schools. The

best advice is to list the information in the IEP as goal driven with good

accommodations, daily communication and an appropriate BIP if necessary. If

issues arise you have the IEP to back you up. I have seen a few situations that

teachers would stop and correct TAs referring to the IEP and parents wishes and

concerns. I  was pleased to see that the parents requests were being honored and

respected. If you are not pleased with the info coming home you can meet with

the teacher and bring in a sample template for the staff to follow. Noah does

need an appropriate way to communicate.
