Guest guest
nathan is also a huge green eggs and ham fan, has i think 4 books, a living book for the computer, and a video. I would suggest either download the audio version from itunes, or where ever, and then mabe buy a book and make copies of the pages and laminate those, make into a book for him. what about fabric? will he rip it? you could copy the pages and print onto fabric and sew him up a book too, that could even be washable let alone very durable. shawna Wishing all a very Merry Chirstmas! http://sewshawna.blogspot.com ________________________________ To: Sent: Sunday, December 7, 2008 10:26:38 AM Subject: Perseveration help..... Hi, This is , mom to who is now 15. It's been a long time since I posted. We got rid of all of 's extra labels and changed it over to PDD, NOS in April. He got that from his service agency-not KKI. Anyway, that is the best thing we have done for him and we should have done it years ago. Anyway, one of 's most challenging behaviors is perseveration - and it's almost always on a book (Green Eggs and Ham). We can be anywhere and he gets the thought and sticks to it until he gets the book. Last night, we were stuck on an interstate outside of Baltimore for 5 1/2 hours due to icy roads. He must have asked for the book a thousand times. When we finally got to our local Walmart around midnight, they were out of them and he was content getting a new video. This morning, he is watching the movie for the third time and now is asking for the book. He is content with tearing up a large magazine for now (he always tears the book up after he goes through the pages once or twice-then he carries the pages around). I know he will start asking for the book again soon. He use to hit me after asking for the book a few times - last night he only hit (and not hard) me once. So in that regard, progress has been made. My son in law took him outside on the road to show him how icy it was and also to see the line of vehicles that were stranded behind and in front of us. He continued to ask for the book. Any tips for handling this behavior would be greatly appreciated.
Guest guest
We have the living book, videos, audios, scanned copies and in the past, laminated copies. He likes the feel and sound of tearing the book. I equate his need for the book as an alcoholics need for booze. He goes through a ritual - he goes through the book first. Then he tears about 1/2 inch at the top throughout the book, then he tears the pages out completely (at an angel). He'll line them up in a circle or he'll throw them up in the air (with a fan pushing the pages several feet away) and repeat the process. He can go weeks without the book. He can get through the school day knowing it's in his bookbag. I probably buy 30 copies each year, if not more. He's had the fascination with green eggs and ham since he was four years old (that is him in Libby Kumin's communication book) and he is now 15. Sometimes I can substitute with a magazine. When I got him the book the other day, he also asked for One Fish, Two Fish. I told him we'd get it when we went to the doctors. As soon as we got to the doctors, he started in with the " I want a book " . He hit me several times while at the same time loving up to me. I really think at this point in time, he is drugged up from new medications or he wouldn't have hit me. I just want to know how to redirct him when he gets stuck. btW, the kid is so strong, he will tear up the thick laminated pages and anything sewn. shawna@...> wrote: > > nathan is also a huge green eggs and ham fan, has i think 4 books, a living book for the computer, and a video.
