Im sorry guys that it has been taking me so long to respond.  I need to catch up

on my emails.  Im just feeling emotionally and physically exhausted.  Noah was

in the hospital because of a staph infection in the ear.  He has had a chronic

ear infection for about a year and a half.  We were back and forth between

specialist and pediatrican.  When they cultured it, they discovered that it was

staph.  The problem is that Noah will not take medication.  We have tried

EVERYTHING!!!!  We cannot hide it, he can taste it no matter what.  Another

issue was that the bacteria only responded to two types of antibiotics, Bactrim

and Clyndamysn(hope i spelled that right).  The Bactrim came in practically a

five gallon bucket and he had to take it all, which was not going to happen.

Even if I sat on him, wrapped him in a towel, tilted his head, pinched his nose

and blew in his mouth, he would not take it.  Plus, the fights were so physcial,

it felt like

borderline child abuse, I wasnt going to do it anymore. The clyndamysin tasted

so bad.  I dipped my pinky in it to taste it and it practically closed my

throat, that is how horrible it was.  Anyway, he eventually ended up in teh

hospital for iv and he seems to be doing ok.  But, as many of you know, when you

take care of one thing, something else rears its ugly head.. A couple of days

into our stay, Noah began throwing some really bad tantrums, and screaming like

I've never heard him.  I chalked it up to cabin fever, because we couldn;t even

leave the room, (contact contamination).  But this behavior continued when we

got home.  He has been terribly aggressive towards himself, his sister and I.

I mean, it has been getting bad.  He has a huge knot on his head from slamming

it into the door jam, and on the floor. He punches himself and me.  He pulls his

sisters hair.  Just today, he almost pushed his sister off the car and pulled

her hair, and

I just could not let that go. I tried a supernanny and put him in time out

calmly and told him, " you are in timeout, you do not hit " , and everytime I tried

to walk away, he lunged at my legs and began punching me.  I just kept putting

him back and this went on for about 30 minutes before he finally sat in time

out, and thats only because I started to cry.  He hates to see me cry.  I was

just exhausted.  I cant let him continue to hurt himself and others.  He is a

very strong eight year old and he is capable of doing some damage.  I dont know

what to do.  He gets so violent, i worry so much about what will happen to him

when i am no longer around, and my fear is that nobody will want to help me if

he behaves this way.  I dont know what to do.  I feel alone.  Thanks for letting

me vent.  Leilani

Leilani, just wanted to send you some cyber-hugs your way, hope Noah

settles down.

Does sound like so much is going with his underlying medical issues so

hope prayers are answered to find some solutions to what is going on.

Sounds like no matter what type like time-out is given, he does not

have any control due to his health issues.

I wanted to share this your way for a possible culprit.

Many children afflicted with autism have had frequent ear infections

as young children and have taken large amounts of antibiotics. These

are thought to exaggerate the yeast problem. Other possible

contributors to Candida overgrowth are hormonal treatments;

suppressants drug therapy; exposure to herpes, chicken pox, or other

" chronic " viruses; or exposure to chemicals that might upset the

immune system. There is an increased probability, that a " general "

environmental factor affecting our immune systems (i.e. ozone layer

depletion, " toxic " chemicals, etc.) may be operative, affecting many

children and adults.

if Noah reacts when you cry, I would use that to my advantage. Jake does not

like when anyone cries so if he starts to push or hit, we over dramatize and act

as if he has hurt us to get our point across that he cannot push, hit or pull

hair, etc. We do this even when he slams doors " Ouch! That hurts mommy's

earts! " etc. His teacher also uses this and it has honesty helped to change his

behavior more than anything else. Now, when he is sick or starting to get sick,

nothing will help. He is then out of control. That is when I know that he is

getting sick. Nothing else works. Maybe somthing else is going on with Noah?

Still not well? Something else hurting? Tired?

I know how frustrating it is not to be able to know what is going on. Jake is 9

and also none verbal.

Leilani,

I'm sending a big hug to you too! What an awful time you & your family has been

having.

Staph in the ear - wow. I've never heard of such a thing, and I did a lot of

research when had Staph twice earlier this year. I pray that they were

able to clear it up at the hospital. has gotten better at taking

medicine over time, but it's usually no more than 1 teaspoon twice a day. Not

the amount poor Noah was supposed to take.

Sorry no advice on the behavior issues, since 's always seemed to have

them. I'm learning a lot has to do with her sensory issues...

Leilani, Sorry to hear about your little guy. get that way after

antibiotics because it cause yeast build up in his gut. Does he take

a probiotic? I order 's from Wellness Pharmacy and they are

gluten free/casein free. It is also important to limit sugar intake

because yeast build from sugar and get worst. Even when they can take

antibiotics the staph infection go away and sometimes come back

repeatedly. Make sure Noah is taking a good supplement. After such

strong antibiotics you need to build his immune system back up. I

have heard of staph in the ear, the nose, etc. Also vitamin B-6 helps

with aggressive behaviors if taken in doses of 500 mg. Make sure to

get help from a doctor with supplements because I would not want it

to interfer with meds Noah is taking. Wellness Pharmacy knows about

supplements and they can help tell you how to take them.Let me know

if you want their phone number it is toll free.I also have on a

slow release melatonin that helps him calm down at night and sleep

through the night. Cyndi B

leilani, many  hugs, I know all about the super ear infections, nathan had a

resistent pseudomis bilateral ear infection, had to have a picc line put in

etc and receive several weeks of iv antibiotics as only a couple would kill that

nasty infection. Luckily was the opposite, soo sick he didnt do much

other than sleep and run high fevers for about two months. I agree noah needs to

learn not to hit, maybe his ears hurt? I know when nathan was younger and

actualy got  hurt, he would get mad instead of cry like most kids do. I use to

just hold him tight and talk quietly to him calming him  down, and

ofcourse crying too as nathan also doesnt like to see me cry, and it hurts when

our kids hit. did outgrow that behavior, thank goodness, but now he is

hurtful by saying " your mean " when im not being mean, at the least, sniff, but I

think its a normal teenage thing mabye to do this with your parents, hmmm. many

prayers and hugs,

things will get better. shawna

Wishing all a very Merry Chirstmas!

Leilani: First go take a nap!!!

Then start calling pharmacies and find one which can flavor ANY medicine to

taste like something your child will like. Write that number in big letters

someplace for the next time.

Then consider that the antibiotics he took may have caused overgrowth of

yeast, giving him stomach pains. Treat wtih probiotics, yogurt and as a

last resort, talk to the doc about a round of anti- yeast meds. Personally,

I prefer diet to meds. IF he can eat and will eat yogurt, look for the ones

with lactobacillus.

Leilani,

I remember Bactrim tasting just really aweful also. One time when I could not

get jake well, I resorted to having them do injections. They had to do 4 at one

time but it was fast, over quick and he got the meds in. He also got well.

They don't usually offer that option up but Jake was the same way....After 4
