Guest guest
Same here Holly with several who I have confronted. When was getting older & stronger during his middle school years. I figure I would have problems that I better do something as whoever would set him off would create one of those meltdowns then trigger off pretty severe behavioral issues. This is when he was dx'd at a late age with autism, then behold eating, breathing, & sleeping anything to do with autism. I have had the opportunity to meet several times with Dennis Debbaudt as he is a retire cop and addresses the autism risk management. I am very glad he shared so much for those preventive measures. We never know what kind of day our individuals are going to have. This morning my friends and I visit with one of our state Representative and very glad he was supported on alot of the topics we had shared his way. He was very pleased to know that we have Founded an adult support group as we do allow parents with the younger ones to come aboard as they are learning to prepare themselves to address even issues as this as several of my friends who have encountered these issues when one gets arrested have advocated for several parents at a hearing where there individuals were safe from getting arrested, thank goodness for this judge that understood the autism lingo in regards to coming together and assist where needed. This is why we have join committee meetings, advocate among our support group and an Organization called Community Now to take action with the House and State Representatives. January will be a good month to approach the Legislative as it will be in session soon. Next week meeting with another State Representative. In January preparing for the Legislative sessions which is all part of my agenda these days as they are now reading our latest DOJ report on the state schools findings . Today, I had actually learn from the state representative that he has a bill out for many of us who are also addressing for the alternative biomedical approach. His eyes just widen when I spoke about my mission with Master Stevo and how many who have crossed my path for their individuals also benefiting from this protocol. Just awesome as he just started pouring out his mission sharing about the bill. My friends just loved it as they got to share their story, one of them was on the military issues, another topic was on the Community Base Services, waiting list, education, etc. Choose Freedom. Irma,20,DS/ASD > > This is something that concerns me more than ever as I watch Jake age. Where will he go? What will he do at school? Will people hold him accountable beyond his ability? I have friends whos teenage sons have already been arrested, facing charges, and whose kids have been expelled from schools (within a special ed classroom no less!). Where does it stop and when is anyone going to start facing the reality of how many children there are in this world with Autism and how the hell did they get it? What is going to happen to the 1 in 150 kids that will soon be reaching their teenage years? If you think teenage years are hard, try teenage years with Autism? It is not pretty! > Just wanted to pass along my Merry Cheer! > Love to all! > Holly
Guest guest
Irma, I had joined the community now group but I got so far behind in reading that I had to turn off my emails for now. You all have so much going on but it did open my eyes to so much that is going on in TX. I have a cousin in one of the institutions. She has been there her entire life and she is now in her late 60's. Deaf, blind, mute, retardation, the works. Her mother went on to become a special educator but my cousin had to remain because there was no one who could take care of her. She was a single mother (the girls father died of cancer when she was a very young child) and they also had 2 other children. Sad. Anyway, I know you are all facing enormous challenges but I feel that so much will change. I just hope that people step up to the plate and get things in place for these people still living in the institutions that have been written about. I am not particularly one who thinks that all institutions should be closed and that all are bad. I think here are bad people, $ hungry people, and innocent people who are easily taken advantage of. Still, there are so many wo do need care and if these places were run like a college campus/assisted living type environment, then maybe things would be better. Hospitals often have wide spread abuse, but we don't close them down.....we fix the problems. However, I agree, the places that are being written and talked about are horrible and these people are criminals! I hate when the disabled and the elderly are taken advantage of. It makes my blood boil! Dignity, is that not what we all want? Holly
Guest guest
Holly, you're right, it does get pretty overwhelming and we do have to trim down when we get bombarded with so much. I also go on no mail and read from the listserve when possible. We have shared that many caregiver who wish to continue caring to also receive some training, better pay with better benefits to assist them where needed as many as your cousin do require the assistants and many family or Guardians are unable to tend to them as I have several friends who suffer from health issues themselves or for whatever reason and also protect those caregivers or agencies. My friends have managed to place their love ones in group homes or apartments with 24/7 care and they are very content. It is not going to happen all at once, it is those which you have read that only see our individuals as business and not providing the care where needed. The amount of funds they are making out of our individuals is sad and some ex-employees who have created the abuse or cause death share how much they can do what they can due to the sovereign immunity which Texas has allowed. Most do not have family anymore but it is protecting them not to fall through those cracks. It is work in progress, lots still need to be iron out and have heard that changes will happen from some inside sources. Totally agree with some of what you had mentioned. Many do require training, some where just hired and did not need require a HS Diploma or GED, no training needed which was one of the investigation my friends and I ended up researching. One of the places contacted was at our community zoo to ask what type of credentials where needed? Salary based on experience and an educational degree required. Let's hope for all those forgotten ones receive the care, it is preventing them from being thrown to the curb. The State Representative who we spoke to this morning was proud to hear of some of the programs that are already addressing in several other cities example like a community college with vocational & technical training for some of our individuals. He is going to be meeting with one of our community college, will ask and share of the program which is already addressing many individuals with severe, moderate or high cognitive levels at one of their breakfast meeting which is nice working together especially for when our individuals age out of the school system. Most of all it is protecting as my son as I am his Care Provider to live with me while I am around where his funds do not get cut as there is a proposal going on to have them cut. At this time, do not wish for to be at a group home, it is a last resort but my family and friends at this time are looking into alternative avenues to assist each other. It is really nice to read your input, appreciate it very much. This is the reality for when our individuals get older or just the outcome. Such another ball game and advocating is never ending indeed.
