Guest guest
Hi Margaret We are trying to control her anxiety and negative behaviours. Mostly the air swallowing which is creating so much gas which then makes her have the negative behaviours due to her pain so I guess mostly the anxiety. We tried nitroprazam and ativan but they increased her anxiety. We also tried risperidal which gave her seizures. I will talk to the doctor about starting at a lower dose but I think she said that she already did that and would increase it slowly. Thanks for the suggestions. Prozac is an older med....there are newer SSRI's with less side affects. What are you trying to control.....anxiety, negative behaviors, OCD? Sara is right about the 'starting low and go slow'. Our kids seem to process the meds at a different rate and don't need the full, normal dosage. I have been told that Gareth being on 1 mg of Risperdal, twice a day, is really 'nothing' compared to a normal male at 165#, who would be on a much higher dose. BUT.......Gareth needs the 1 mg and anything higher or lower brings back the negative behaviors. I know that it is hard to question the doctor who is writing the scripts, but you need to ask what the normal dosages are for normal people and, then, ask him to knock it down a notch. Gareth does well on a low dose of Luvox (my favorite) or Lexapro for his OCD. I am sure that others will chime in on their favorite meds if it is anxiety you're dealing with. Negative behaviors usually are dealt with by Risperdal (approved for autism) or Seraquel, and , I think, Abilify is in the same category. When we first started Gareth on meds, my DH was TOTALLY against it. Well..........my DH was out of town M-F and I was the one dealing with Gareth. I started the meds and after a while, he thanked me. He saw the positive difference within two weeks. Take care, Everyone. Margaret **************Make your life easier with all your friends, email, and favorite sites in one place. Try it now. Guest guest
Hi, Everyone....Ali....another thought.....after Gareth was on the Risperdal he started to communicate.....thus was able to tell us where/when he hurt. Many parents have reported that their kids start communicating after starting Risperdal.....unfortunately, it isn't all kids. I have two bottles of Nature Made Super B-Complex with Vit C and Folic acid. I bought a 2 pack, opened one bottle for Gareth, and then, stopped giving it to him. I will gladly mail them to you or anyone else if you think it will help. Take care, Everyone.
