Yo Matt,

People will always say things, always have, always will. Take the challenge, go

deep within and rise above it. This is what I do.

Gretchen

P.S. I hope your Mom doesn't have to be in the hospital much longer.

Hey ya Gretchen, yeah I hear ya. When they think I am drunk I just say yes, and

then laugh inside. Keeps me sane.

Thanks for the well wishes for Mom, I hope she is no in there much longer

either.

Once, I walked on campus. A man spoke loudly, " your shoes are very

heavy " ( I have foot drop, but the shoes are not heavy)

I replied --- My steel legs are heavy .............. then, he became very

quiet and felt very sorry about his words ......

When people say or do insensitive things, I try to give them the benefit of the

doubt and to respond gently and graciously. Alot of times (most of the time),

they're trying to connect but don't have a frame of reference to always do it in

a way that is graceful. There have been times in my life when I wasn't so kind

and responded with sarcasm or in a haughty tone. I kinda see it now as my

opportunity to change the world by being gracious and to help people understand

disability better and to help them get over the awkwardness that underlies most

of the " dumb " comments. I think that goes a long way to exposing and

diminishing the stigma attached to disability. (Conversely, before when I

reacted negatively to their comments, I think it increased the stigmatizing

factor.)

Caroline,

I have has someone make the same comment that my shoes look heavy.  One time

someone said They could tell my sister (a CMTer) and were related because we

walk the same.

It amazes me what falls out of peoples mouths sometime.  They obviously don't

think before they speak.

I was in a mall in a shoe store, Wild Pair, looking for some tennis shoes for my

braces. The young guy who worked there came up and said he liked my boots and

the decorations on them, I had on metal braces and boots. I never told him I had

on braces. I just thanked him. He was being honest, he liked how they looked so

I didn't want him to feel bad or anything. I actually bought a pair of Nikes for

my plastic braces from him. I have a friend who just started wearing AFOs. He

had a mild case of polio as a kid. Because of the problems he had heard about

plastic braces and hot weather he got metal ones. He has been totally surprised

how no one has said anything about his braces. He was expecting some comments

but has had none.
