Guest guest
Yes, with continued PT and/or exercise, surrounding muscles/nerves of atrophied ones can be strengthened/regenerate. Two good ways of doing this I have found are walking in sand (like on a beach) and walking in a pool/and other aquatic exercises - especially in a pool with adjustable currents. I use about a 3 or 4. This is for resistance which helps build muscle So now I am 58. Sounds old to some,(quit laughing !) young to others. I am pretty much the same as I was at 28, I've been power walking, biking, doing aerobics, pilates or in the pool and on the beach all those years. (Not all at the same time however, lol) After foot surgery at 11 years old, it took awhile to get used to my 'new feet'and school shoes, and the orthopedist was the one who suggested beach walking in the sand and swimming/kicking to strengthen muscles. Guest guest
I use my feet toes to grab the floor. I do yoga. I highly recommend the above two. I go to gym to train muscles. I plan to swim after I find a pool nearby. May you be well and happy Caroline
Guest guest
Donna - I'm with you! I believe in working hard at rebuilding strength and balance diminished by CMT. I also am a firm believer of taking extra care of the feet and legs (strengthening and massages). Best of luck. -wheels
Guest guest
Thanks for the input, Gretchen. You have no doubt worked hard to be where you are but are very fortunate to be the same as you were at age 28. I'm almost 61 and would give anything to be back to where I was even at age 40! I guess my reckless lifestyle has finally caught up with me and now it's time to do penance. I hope you're right but after 10 weeks of PT that includes 1/2 hour of pool exercise and 1/2 hour of floor exercises it seems like not much improvement. Beach walking is a great idea, but I can't walk in soft sand since my right ankle is pretty bad. I could walk OK last winter on Daytona Beach since it's so solid, but not too far since there was still a boot on my foot. > > Yes, with continued PT and/or exercise, surrounding muscles/nerves of atrophied ones can be strengthened/regenerate.
