Guest guest
Shriner's at Houston just told me that actually for CMT type 1A it is better for the person that has it not to do any kind of resistence exercises. For example, my son, he is 6 yrs. old. He is in first grade and I agree that at school they dodes not know anything about CMT, but I am an advocate for my son there since I am a teacher and work at the same school he is at. The OT therapist just told me that his hands are very weak, and we need to preserve the muscles that do work so they are transfering him to a laptop. They do not want him to cut and write as much anymore. Any advice anyone? I hope this comment helps you in some way. Anita GOD BLESS YOU!!! Guest guest
Anita, Resistance exercise is probably the BEST kind of exercise for CMT in general. Something as simple as swimming can do this. Look through out Exercise File for Dr. Chetlin's info on the subject and other articles on exercise. Guest guest
Be careful with using the laptop, especially as your child gets older and uses it more and more. If the hands are already weak, then your child will compensate for that on the keyboard, and could wind up with repetitive stress on tendons, and inflammation... That is not to say that your child shouldn't use a computer. Just get him software that lets him verbally command the computer and 'write' his work. > > > From: Lori Mattheiss <mattheiss137@...> > Subject: Re: PT and OT in school > > Date: Saturday, September 25, 2010, 7:32 PM > > > Â > > > > Mark > > Do you feel the OT and PT given by the school therapists (who most likely know nothing about CMT) is equivalent to outside OT and PT at say a children's Hospital?? > > Lori > > >> > > > > > > > > > > > > > > > >
Guest guest
My hands are in much better shape using the lap top then they were before. Type has been great exercise for my hands. I can type forever with less fatigue. In a message dated 9/29/2010 10:39:35 A.M. Guest guest
Anita - My son had early onset symptoms, (diagnosed at 9) and the docs agreed that the laptop was the correct solution. He stopped cutting with scissors and taking notes on paper when he was about 11...Since CMT progresses differently in everyone, if your people are telling you that you need to do it now, and you trust your medical team...follow their suggestions. My son has been on the laptop nonstop since he was 11, and thank heavens we've had no incidents of carpal tunnel or any of the other stresses that computer use can cause. However, He does use the therapy clay and the spongey ball thingys to keep his hands flexed. He's now 17- and a complete guru on a computer because he spends all of his time either doing school work, or playing...whatever. As with all things, moderation will prevent over-exertion... > > > > > > From: Lori Mattheiss <mattheiss137@> > > Subject: Re: PT and OT in school > > > > Date: Saturday, September 25, 2010, 7:32 PM > > > > > > Â > > > > > > > > Mark > > > > Do you feel the OT and PT given by the school therapists (who most likely know nothing about CMT) is equivalent to outside OT and PT at say a children's Hospital?? > > > > Lori > > > > >> > > > > > > > > > > > > > > > > > > > >
