I'm one! The foot tingling/burning/cold was there at the annoying level but it

was the cramps that first got my undivided attention. It was the same with my

father.

Stretching helps!

leg cramps and other leg annoyances

I'm wondering how many of those diagnosed with CMT first symptom was leg cramps?

That would be me......terrible leg and foot cramps for years......mostly in

middle of the night. Agonizing.

Also mind the cold.....feet and lower calf feel like ice in the

winter.....and hurt. Am 76 now. Found out I had CMT1B when I was 65.

My father was afflicted also....and also experienced leg & foot cramps and

minded the cold weather in his feet also. And now my daughter suffers same

symptoms at 53.

- If you don't mind my asking - because for everyone the age range is

different...how long did those cramps last or did they ever really ease up?

Also, what, if anything helped to relieve the cramping?

Thanks

Cramps and  twitching of my calf muscles were my first symptoms which went

on for several years. Then soreness that lasted several days after walking

long distances which for me was the first sign that somthing was wrong because

there was no building of the muscles only tearing down.

I used quinine pills during my teens to abate the cramps which started about age

10, peaking at age 13, and then at 15 and 16 I had the tendon transfer

operations, and i don't remember cramps in my calves being a problem thereafter.

I did and do still get them in my fingers, my wrists, and my chest and back,

sometimes at the same time...try balancing that...lean forward and the chest

cramp hurts more...lean back and the mid-back cram is exacerbated!

Since starting yoga, cramps are only a problem when doing the yoga, and this has

gotten much , much better.

So stretching, surgery, and quinine are the things I used to control cramping.

My first symptom most definitely was feet and leg cramping, and it

was not your usual charlie horse. It was painful cramping.

Sometimes my toes would curl under and I would have to force them out

of the cramp with my fingers and hands. I still get painful cramps

at times, but the affected area has changed as my CMT progresses.
