Hello and Welcome ! What a great city you're in. All those museums, the

capitol, etc. I love it and surrounding areas. Do you know about the CMT support

group in land?

Hope to hear more from you in the future.

,

I have been using(attempting to use) MacSpeech for a very long time. Until Apple

became what it is today in terms of market share and market leadership in

innovation, particularly for the handicapped, the company that made best (only?)

speech-to-text software, the previous corporate iteration of Dragon, did not at

first support Mac.

They then licensed IBM to market a speech-to-text program using its technology.

This IBM program, called ViaVoice, figured prominently at a large computer

conference with Steve Jobs as keynote speaker, though he did not give the

demonstration, which used the most powerful (read: expensive) system available.

(Apple has had reasonably workable speech-to-text built into its operating

systems since the late 1990s, but it is limited in its scope, being for control

and not dictation. It is better called speak-to-control.)

During the 2000s, ViaVoice was renamed MacSpeech, but it still remained the

orphan step-child for Dragon.

Having contacted the company myself by phone to inquire about future Mac

support, it sounded by the scripted answer that was given me that they believed,

in 1997-8, that Apple was not long for the world, and/or that they simply were

not interested. (At the time, Microsoft actively discouraged software companies

from making Apple versions as a part of their strategy to see more Windows

software developed.)

Dragon has been purchased, and the program has recently been renamed " Dragon

Dictate, " and this update is much, much, much better than any MacSpeech Version

to date. And I did not get a faster computer at the changeover.

Dragon Dictate will use your MacSpeech voice profiles, so no re-training needs

to be done. More control commands are available that apply to more software. And

multiple microphones can be used with the same profile.

Having purchased my last 5 computers (ostensibly for enough power) and version

after version of software in this poor environment for Mac speech-to-text

programs, MacSpeech was helpful. A bit. Sometimes. Though sometimes one became

so involved in making it work, that one's work did not get done.

Dragon Dictate has improved the experience 10-fold.

Updates from Macspeech are discounted.

FYI.

Regards,

Gretchen: I have no commercial affiliation with any of these companies, and I am

not in the software business in any form.

This is simply a report of my own knowledge gained through my own experience

looking for text-to-speech software since I got a computer in 1981. CMT has

always been severe in my hands.

Samsung promised computers controlled by voice to be introduced in 1983... and I

am still awaiting their entry into the market! I actually have a clear memory of

what I was doing (driving in a car) and where it was (along the primary

audio-video store for my town as we drove by) when I heard this reported on CBS

radio news.

Warmly,

Welcome, . You were my first source of information regarding CMT many

years ago. I live in Hamilton and will hopefully be enjoying the lights at the

Falls tonight. I will wave a big hello as we drive by St. 's tonight.

Our final activity for the Holiday season. I just wanted to say thanks for the

information and to say a BIG WELCOME to . There is a great bunch of people

here. Happy New Year.

Thanks again,
