Guest guest
Hi Caroline, I'm interested in hearing more. Is this as simple as just sitting and grabbing the floor with the toes? Glad you have seen so much progress! Lynna From: @... Date: Sat, 16 Oct 2010 12:44:26 +0000 Subject: I highly recommend using toes to grab the floor Hello, I highly recommend using toes to grab the floor. USC physical therapy program ranks 1st in the US. The director of the PhD program, an associate professor, especially designed this exercise for me at the end of 2007. When I first tried this exercise, my toes can't move, not to mention grabbing the floors. After doing this exercise for two years, whenever I feel I want to do this exercise, e.g, sitting, walking, and so on---- Now, I see the difference. I get a lot of strength to stand and walk stable. This exercise can help train the calf muscle in both legs. I believe I will be able to stop wearing plastic AFO sooner or later. please take care Caroline
Guest guest
Please give more details? this exercise was and has been recommended to me by most of my PT's.  But it causes more pain and nueropathy symtoms. So how did you start? 2 toe curls around a towell or toes pressing down to floor? Guest guest
Dear Lori, I can only speak from my experience and being a diligent patient. I haven't been able to do even a modest number for at least 8 years. It stirs up my pain. I live pain free from my neuropathy, untill i do something stupit like doing toe curls, paint the house, move etc. it's crazy a little thing like toe curls can cause so much pain. That's where i learned the lesson if its broke leave it alone and strenghen the next higher muscle that does work. Still let me know how you started. I am assuming most CMT'ers are like me and just can not do them because of pain generation. Guest guest
My toes can't move and I feel no strength in my toes while trying to press down or push against the floor, before I do this exercise. I use my toes to press down or push against the floor, when I sit, stand, and walk. I started this exercise when I sit, put the two feets flat on the floor while sit, use the five toes to press down or push against the floor then, I feel more strength, I do this exercise when I stand then, I feel more strength, I do this exercise when I walk I suggest to start this exercise when sitting on the chair eating, reading, working, and so on. Thus, few harms might be caused when the leg muscles are not strong enough. I do this exercise all almost 15 hours a day. I don't do this exercise only when I am sleeping. After several months, or one year, my toes can move more and more. I plan to use toes to walk without plastic AFO. I think replying on AFO makes me exercise my legs less and thus lose the muscle strength more. Make sure you don't get hurt before you decide to try any kind of exercise. I try to keep my muscle strength before CMT treatments come out. I believe the treatment is coming. This exercise works for me. I highly recommend. Guest guest
If I over do in anything I have to rest up the next day and I'm so sore. I cant do them because my toes are to short...and my feet are a size one a half.... Try to find shoes, my feet are as wide as they are long. Still in slippers and in a wheel chair. Guest guest
Donna, I would LOVE to see video blogging of your PT!!! I think it would be enormously beneficial. Maybe consider posting on Youtube? Great Idea! Lynna From: donna.dewick@... Date: Sun, 17 Oct 2010 14:50:14 +0100 Subject: Re:I highly recommend using toes to grab the floor Oh Caroline! I just did a paratriathlon session yesterday with British Triathlon and this is what they recommended for ALL of us! It is a way to work total foot muscles. They were in the sand pit doing this (reminds me of Gretchen's sand walking advice!) - but the PT advice is the same as the athlete advice. Take a towel under your foot. Using your toes scrunch it up moving it under your foot. Then the reverse - use your toes to push it away. Everyone I met did this. Even just thinking about moving - if you can't today imagine it - can apparently help stimulate re-enervation! Thanks for sharing. I've been thinking of getting a Flip to start video blogs of my PT. Would anyone value that? Donna ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ I TRI because I CAN! www.myfitnessyear.com ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
