Guest guest
I had alot of back pain all of a sudden at one time, radiating into my hip. An orthopedist specializing in backs had me try PT, TENs and ice. When those failed, and Xrays and MRI showed a ruptured disk, I had a successful surgery or it would have only gotten worse and I was sick of the pain. Seven years later, after a routine exercise program, loosing 30 lbs, change in diet, had a different kind of back pain. Nerves being compressed.Another successful surgery. Diagosis: Arthritis. No EMG/NCVs needed. The 1st surgery was due to a gardening mishap, the second, age related. So my experience is somewhat different. Perhaps you might want to meet with an orthopedist who specializes in backs. I would hold off on a new neuro until you see an orthopedist. The Neurontin may help, so may ice and PT in the meantime. Guest guest
- I don't know if your insurance would cover it, but I take both my girls to the chiropractor as they were complaining that their legs hurt. Since we've started going there, I've not heard one complaint. Some people don't believe in Chiropractors, but its always worth a try. Guest guest
Sounds like what my Mom has. My Mom dosen't have cmt. She has a pinched sciatic nerve and trouble with disk 5 I think. The neurologist was able to find the damage with a single test. No pain involved. Hope that this is an easy fix for you. In a message dated 12/29/2010 8:06:46 A.M. Guest guest
Hi , I recently had back surgery (not CMT related) with symptoms like you described. The neurosurgeon didn't perform EMG/NCV. He was able to do other manual tests to confirm the diagnosis. Same with a friend of mine (not CMT related) who had surgery last year for a ruptured disk. The doctor did tell me that sitting is really bad for the back. I not supposed to sit longer than 45 minutes. Need to switch positions every 30-45 minutes. I also ice my back. Kind of funny thing to do in the winter...under my electric blanket, but it helps after activity, to reduce pain/swelling. I also take neurontin and use lidocaine patches. Also, took PT sessions to refresh on proper movement. The cauda equina is an important area to protect. (I'm sure you know that already.) I'd consult with a neurosurgeon as well as an orthopedist specializing in lumbar area, to get opinions from both about treatment/care of this area. I'm a nursing student, medical assistant, wear bilateral AFOs for foot drop. I was diagnosed at 16, started wearing AFOs for work at 31, and now at 38, I feel like I'm falling apart! I have been out of work for over a month because of what started as a stabbing pain in my right leg, but in the front, about 2 inches above the knee. Now that leg is numb, tingling, shoots with pain, and is weak. I had an xray of my back that looked normal after it started hurting too, normal. Next came an MRI of my low back, and it was abnormal, showing enlargement of the cauda equina. Another MRI shows multiple neuropathy. Next step, go to see a new neuro. Fun times! My plan in that if they want to do an NCV/EMG I'll tell them that I will tell them what they want to know without torture, but thanks just the same!! I've tried lots of meds that don't seem to work for this pain, other than narcotics, and muscle relaxers help some, but I hate that they cloud my thinking. I have a new med to try, that some on this group have had luck with, neurontin (gabapentin) I've wanted to try it for my foot pain, which I have pretty much all the time but yet didn't motivate me by itself. It's like I hit my breaking point, and I can't take any more pain. Has anyone else had symptoms like this with CMT?
Guest guest
I have been using a chiropractor for years, if it was not for him I would be in major pain almost all of the time. Just last week while visiting family in PA for the holiday I was in major pain, went to the chiropractor and he said my hip was out almost a 1/2 inch. I was to the point I could barely walk.
