Guest guest
There is an ongoing debate on weather you should freeze seeds. Some say when you freeze them, any moisture in the seed freezes and renders the seed less viable. I freeze my seeds and don't seem to have any issues....by nature they are hardy little things. If I'm not mistaken, the owner of Sprout people also freezes with no issues. Sent from my BlackBerry® powered by Virgin Mobile. Re: Freezing sprout seeds nope.....the best place to store your seeds is in the freezer.....happy trails !.....peace, mary > > I travel most of the year and pull a 40' RV trailer. I dehydrate on the road and sprout seeds as well. At times the trailer gets fairly hot, and I was wondering if I can freeze the sprouting seeds that I carry with me. Will that kill the seed and not let it sprout? >
Guest guest
Yes, but the seed banks vacuum pack the seeds before they go into the freezer. I know that Gil and Sprout People freezes his seeds and recommends it. I never have. Guess I've just been lucky ew Re: Freezing sprout seeds Yes, I keep my sprouting seeds in the freezer because of heat and bugs. You've heard of seed banks? They freeze the seeds and that keeps them viable a lot longer than other storage. H.
Guest guest
I have a food saver and that is sort of a vacuum packer.   I wasn't sure about using it with seeds and that is great to know. I have a bunch of seeds as want to plant some but not all in the pack. So when finally plant more now or in the fall (our growing season here) will put the others in a vacuum bag and vacuum it with Food Saver. Then may store in refrigerator afterwards.  For you in the north, I know I was told that freezing the grass seed and then scraping the dirt ith a rake and sprinkling the seed was the way to plant seed. If have it straw put across it helps to keep the birds from eating the seed.  But the freezing was important. I also keep my garden seeds in the fridge year round with no problems. The seed banks are vacuum pack their seeds because they are going to store them longer than you or I will. I have a problem with bugs and have lost a lot of grains, noodles, seeds, etc. to them so I've started freezing a lot of things that most people wouldn't think about freezing.
