Has anyone else had hardware removal after triple arthrodesis, and what was the reason for it? What was the recovery period after surgery, and are you glad you had it done? Thanks!!! Guest guest
Hi , I had a triple arthrodesis done ~25 years ago, along with arch lowering, heel cord lengthening, and toe straightening. I don't recall the doctor saying that he put any hardware in the ankles. I did have pins in two toes on each foot that were removed after a few months. My impression was that he just fused the ankle bones together, but I was young, so I might have gotten it wrong. I did not have PT afterward and one of my ankles has a tendency to 'lock' and not be flexible. When that happens it is extremely painful. That ankle also swells to twice the size of the other in the summer or when it's damp. I'll have to go back and find my records and see if it says anything about hardware. I had the left foot done in July, and the right one done in September, at which point they gave me a walking cast on the left. In December they gave me a walking cast on the right and split the one on the left so I could wean myself off of it. In February they split the right cast. I can't remember how long I kept that cast. Of course, that was all in 1985 and things may have changed since then. I don't know why they did not have me do PT, except that I lived an hour from the hospital and maybe b/c I was 21 and they figured I'd heal fine. If I had it done now, I would insist on having PT. Good luck with your hardware removal! > > I have a triple arthrodesis (+ many other things!) performed on my poor left foot last March.
