Guest guest
Hi Rashid, You know, it might be better for you to START in the pool, as you get going and build up time and muscle, you could slowly add in land based work. Just wondering if you are working with a physical therapist on this too? I really applaud your efforts and committment to making a 'better' you! Guest guest
I do think you need a more specialized person to help. It sounds like he is well meaning but your needs are out of his grasp. Be careful. On Nov 1, 2010, at 10:26 AM, Rashid wrote: > Hello Folks. Guest guest
Hi Rashid,  I would be very careful.  I worked out many years with a couple of very good personal trainers, but they were trainers who had at least a bachelor's degree in physical fitness. One also had specialized training with sports injuries, another had specialized training working with people with fibromyalgia. To me, a basic trainer certificate wasn't enough.  In my experience, the 24 Hr Fitness trainers did not have that much training.  Good communication and knowing your own body is also important. Before beginning with a new trainer, I would have a sit down conversation, explaining my situation and the importance of not over-extending and making progress very slowly.  We developed a partnership with constant communication and flexibility depending on how I was feeling as the workout went along. My body was the boss of every workout, not the trainer. This was definitely not the TV style of training where the trainers push beyond what the person thinks they can handle, which could be very dangerous for us.  I also had a history of many physical therapy sessions before working out with a trainer, so I learned general safety and proper form myself, before even beginning. I'd definitely recommend this.  An injury could really set you back, so I'd be very, very careful. Don't trust your health to just anybody. Even when you're in good hands, continue to be in charge. Only you know how you feel. Pain does not equal gain with CMT.   From: Rashid <rashidbinquadir@...> Subject: Personal Trainers , " CMT_SAGFacilitator " <cmta_sagfgooglegroups> Date: Monday, November 1, 2010, 10:26 AM  Hello Folks. I just wanted to share a little personal thing After seeing all the emails in our group about working out and after FINALLY taking heed of the advice from my primary physician, I joined the 24HR Fitness chain. I signed up to have a trainer for three sessions. I had my first session this morning and I have to say.....those personal trainer peoples are MEAN.....just plain MEAN This guy had me do the elliptical [sp] and I almost died [smile]. I said, " I can really feel this " . Needless to say, he DID NOT catch my subtle hint and he replied, " come on....2 more minutes " . Hmm, or maybe he did catch my hint?? Well anywho's, I had explained my CMT and braces before we started but I don't think he fully understood the situation. After this act of cardio terrorism, I think he gets it now We went onto some Grip Friendly machines, which worked the body, and later we will work in the pool exercises. This is a HUGE life style change for me and I really do wanna eat better and exercise more. Get back to that slimm & sexy me that I knew in college. That said, I humbly ask for you to pray for me, for anyone else out there going thru this 'heart healthy struggle', and be sure to send one up for those Evil Doers called Trainers One Love. Oh Yeah.....Go Giants!!!! RbQ " Let Not The Ego Produce Evil " http://www.charcot-marie-tooth.org/
Guest guest
Does your personal trainer specialize or know all about CMT and how some training can make it worse? Geri I do think you need a more specialized person to help. It sounds like he is well meaning but your needs are out of his grasp. Be careful. Guest guest
Hi Rashid, I have a friend with a personal trainer. I could never do what he expects her to do. She has a horrible time with training and she doesn't have CMT. I would be better off with a physical therapist. Someone that understands that weakness caused by a disease is not laziness. Good Luck to you [Non-text portions of this message have been removed]
Guest guest
Wow, I agree, unless you are experiencing extremely minor symptoms I think you are playing with fire ... Guest guest
Hi Rashid! That is awesome news! Yes Personal Trainers can be evil - but the best ones listen too and it sounds like you found one who was willing to learn, which is great stuff. My rule of thumb is always to start small with small incremental increases, no more than about 10% more per session per week. Pay close attention to how you feel and be willing to step off the gas - there is absolutely nothing wrong with going slower and taking time to build up! Anytime you want to ask questions feel free to drop me an email or to get in touch. I'm not a trainer personal fitness instructor nor am I a doctor but I have taken a long time to build up my own fitness and am always happy to share what I have learned! Take care and good luck. Donna www.myfitnessyear.com (blog and website soon to be relaunched - stay tuned!) Guest guest
Hmmm.... PT could mean a lot of things. Personal Trainer, Physical Therapist, or in my experience, Physical Terrorist. (jk to all the physical therapists out there, but you do terrorize us!) Holli > > Hello Folks.
