Typing has been good exercise for my hands as well, but we are all different.

My neurologist did tell me that I should avoid weight-bearing resistance

exercises, i.e. lifting weights with my hands.

For those using a keyboard, an ergonomic keyboard (i.e. Microsoft 4000 natural)

can really help with avoiding repetitive motion injury.  At a minimum, a wrist

guard can be used to raise the wrists up to a more natural position.  And,

taking frequent breaks.

My hands are in much better shape using the lap top then they were before.

Type has been great exercise for my hands.

I can type forever with less fatigue.

Be careful with using the laptop, especially as your child gets older and

uses it more and more. If the hands are already weak, then your child will

compensate for that
