There are a few books you can read for ideas to try on your own - " Teaching your child the language of social success " is a good book, IMO. It goes through all the various parts of language. " Relationship Development Intervention " RDI Assessment Workshops @ Connections Center and " Teaching children with autism to Mind Read " is one I like also. I think it's a very good book. It teaches the child to look at other people and try to think about what they are feeling. It has drawings without the face drawn in and they have to guess what the person was feeling by the situation, for example. At school, they did a lot of stories without words and my son had to decide what was happening just by looking at the people and their expressions. The Relationship development book - I just got and haven't even opened it yet! I hear good things about this program. A friend borrowed one of the books from me and she said it was fabulous. It has tons of games and activities, each with a " lesson " that is being taught while playing. So it would seem like a great resource. One book is for younger kids and one for older. The book " teaching your child the language of social success " is a good book. I have it. I used it to outline a social skill program for my 14 yo at school, however the teacher did not bother to implement it. I have no idea how well it would work. The book outlines all the various ways of communication from learning about how we hold our facial expression (for instance, do we scowl as we walk down the street or smile?) to personal space and how to tell how close to get to someone when talking. It also goes through all kinds of body language as well as how to dress, etc. Roxanna ô¿ô Autism Happens...

Guest guest
Hi Ozmee! I'm glad you found us! Sounds like you have your hands full. Go to the rheumatic.org site and read the info there. It will help alot. It's important that you take care of yourself too.And yes, water, water, is so important. If you must, flavor it with something without sugar but drop the diet soft drinks if you can. I'm sure you'll get lots of feedback, so good luck and I'll be thinking of you. rheumatic Introduction Hello Everyone, My name is Ozmee and I am not the sufferer, but wife to one. Hubby was diagnosed with RA about two years ago and was given Celebrex, and Vioxx but those didn't do a thing but hurt his stomach so he was switched to Arthrotec. No tests have ever been done to check the effects of this and the doctor, an idiot at best, never said a word about checkups or anything else having to do with the RA. Ozmoe has gotten worse and worse and worse, now he is in constant 24/7 pain, finally succumbed to taking the pain pills prescribed by the doctor, and we got arthritis strength tylenol but he is taking a lot of these. He takes two Arthrotec a day and on some days even that doesn't help at all. He says all of his bones hurt. He is not a complaining type, never has so much as missed one day all of these years even when really not feeling well, but now not one day goes by that he doesn't complain about the pain. So that tells me that it must be pretty bad. A while back his right arm started to hurt. He was at work talking to some people and gestured with it and it felt like it was going to fall off, excruciatingly painful. It has gotten worse and worse so that now whether he reaches up or down it hurts a lot. I am doing all the heavy lifting, mowing the lawn, etc etc so he doesn't try to. He just had an MRI ($1,038.00) which showed negative, so the dr figured it was nerve impingement and has ordered physical therapy. But from reading some of the histories at rheumatic.org page, I am wondering if this is not just a part of his RA and PT would be nothing but a worthless expense? Opinions? I know that this has been going on for two years and has caused a total change in attitude. He suffers pain all day every day and I can't take it any more. So I have been looking around and I found this group, did some reading and I am desperate for help for him. In the mornings yes it is worse as far as stiffness, but the pain is constant. He had a cataract already, he is just 51 this year and now suffers from dryness of that eye so that he has to use drops. We both lost weight, switched to a low-fat, fat-free diet, we eat a lot of veggies and chicken, hardly ever any fried foods, and we quit smoking this past January. He smoked a pipe. He's had sores in his mouth, the dr called them apthous ulcers, but this since he quit, months after. When he was smoking he didn't feel good and he thought the smoking was causing it as he'd have chest pain. All his life, he's suffered from leg pain and at night even during his sleep, his legs will twitch, and he often keeps me awake or wakes me up at night when he gets up to use the bathroom. My sleep is suffering. We tried vitamins when we first started our weight loss program but they hurt our stomachs. He takes only the arthrotec, the tylenol as and sometimes those pain pills. He likes beer and he says that the beer is the only thing that truely helps with his pain. But when he gets a lot of that in him then he says things that tell me more truely how bad the pain really is. Dr's don't seem to be too concerned, to be honest with you. I got a job because I had this feeling that his physical condition was poor and that very soon he might not be able to work any more. He works at an auto parts store as a manager and has cut down his physical activity there as much as possible. I told him be a manager, let the young guys do the physical activity. His ability to be physical has suffered, his arm still hurts and he has constant, never-ending pain that none of these dumb pills seem to be helping. I also started college so I could get a four-year degree so that I could get a job that paid enough to support both of us, thinking ahead to when he cannot work and am really getting worn out. And the other thing that could be important although I don't know, is that we don't drink much water. We drink diet coke mostly and we drink our Folgers French Vanilla coffee. If his story sounds like your story, would you please email me asap and give me the facts on what you did? I went to find a doctor but the ones listed are not on my PPO list. We live in Wilkesboro, North Carolina but we could travel a ways off if it meant finding better medical care. He works six days a week usually though so getting him away from work is kind of hard. I read about the milk thistle and grape seed stuff. I have to go and get my granddaughter's asthma medicine now but I will be back soon. I was hoping to find something productive, not sure if I should buy this milk thistle stuff or not. One doctors list of stuff to use was so long I don't think we could afford it all Thanks for your help. I know my hubby will be so happy if he could even have one day without pain in his life. Guest guest
Risa, Welcome to the group! I am glad that you are following your instincts and having a referral to have Zachary evalutaed. At 4 months, you are taking care of the situation fairly early - many of our concerns were brushed off by our pediatricians for months. There may be some members in this group that are located near you, and could give you some support or information if you end up pursuing helmet/band therapy to treat Zachary. Do you already have an appt. scheduled for the referral? How long will you have to wait? Some of your post replies have already offered helpful advice, such as the links to repositioning techniques, and the severity assessment graphs in the files section of this group. We treated our daughter Remy's plagiocephaly with repositioning only; we didn't have to use a helmet or band. However, Remy didn't have any ear or facial asymmetry; we only had to deal with a flat area on the back, right side of her head. What sort of things are you doing to keep Zachary off of his flat area? In our case, we didn't put Remy on her back at all except to change her diaper. We always used rolled up towells next to her head in the carseat, stroller, and hi-chair. I gave away the bouncie seat and swing, too, and never used them again. Fortunately for us, Remy started sleeping on her sides at night on her own, so we didn't have to worry about being on her flat area at night. All in all, repo itself was an extremely difficult, exhausting, full-time job. I know what you are going through with the repo! Let me know if there is anything I can help you with, and keep us posted on Zachary's situation! Guest guest
Hi! My name is and I have a ....will be 10 year old girl (in 3 weeks) ASpergers and Oppositional Defiance Disorder child with ADHD and PDD. You have come to the right place! A little stressed????? I bet thats putting it midly. Your child has the same things as mine only with bipolar which brings you to a whole different level of frustration. My best friends husband is bipolar and I don't know how she stays married!! Youre right about having sooooo many ups and downs. Hopefully your son is on a good mood stabilizer!! you'll find lots of support here and great advice too! You just have to pick and choose what fits your situation the best. Meds are NOT the cure all but sure can help!!! Won't make them perfect but easier to live with. This is a good place to rant and rave, kick and scream, and let it all out! Lots of support!! Good luck and do something for yourself!!!!! Steph------ Dallas, Texas > Hi, I'm a single mom with a 10 year old boy with > Asperger's, bipolar disorder and oppositional > defiance disorder.
