Carrying anything while going up or down stairs is totally awkward and I usually have to lean a forearm on the hand rail while traversing the steps. I'm a confirmed HNPP diagnosis. Originally it was thought to be CMT 1A. The genetic anomaly is reversed but the effects are the same. About doing steps, I think the big thing is to see what your feet are doing especially that the foot is squarely on the step before putting weight on the foot.
