Guest guest
Hi , I just messaged you before I saw this. I'm thinking Berkeley with alot of warm clothes. (Or maybe that's just because I wanted to go to Berkeley) That Univ. has several degree programs in Disability Studies so they must have all the student accessibilty issues worked out.Whatever she chooses though will be great. Both are excellent schools. I am so happy for , she's so admirable and smart. I am happy for you too! Gretchen:)

Guest guest
, I am not familiar with UC Diego or UC Berkeley, not in terms of the geographic challenges that the campuses provide. I work at the University of Tennessee, which is set in a hilly area of east Tennessee. I have found the campus very difficult to navigate, especially before I got an electric scooter last year. Also, I see very few students on campus with obvious physical disabilies , and I think that is because the campus plant managers don't work too hard to put curb cuts where they are needed or to keep the sidewalk slopes down to a modest level (even the newest sidewalks have some angry slopes, expecially at street crossings. If I were a prospective student, I would walk (or wheel) throughout the campus and take some quick mental or written notes about the mechanics of getting around, go through a few buildings that I knew I might be using (including the student union and library) and note accessible entrances, size of elevators (would each accommmodate a small scooter or a motorized chair). I would check the parking lots. Are there plentiful places for disability parking? Are these places always full? (If they are all full and you have a car, you may be in trouble). Are the parking places, especially the ones for disabled, in close proximity to the building or are they at the bottom of a lot (I know this sounds stupid but my campus has disabled spaces in unreasonable spots). Then I would go to the Office of Disability Services on campus and have a longish talk with the director. Typically, offices of disability services provide services mostly for students with learning disabilities, with attention deficit hyperactivity disorder, with depression or some variation on psychiatric disorders. I would ask what percentage of students on campus have reported and asked for services for physical disabilities (if only a few, I would worry, the nature of the university campus may be scaring these students off). If the director reports that a few are getting services, ask what type of services. It could be (but is not probable) that the Office of Disability Services has purchased a scooter, or scooters, for students with disabilities. If they haven't, it may not be outside their range of responsibilities to do so. Does the campus provide a trolley or bus to get across campus, and if it does, is the vehicle easy for your daughter to get onto and off of? If you need a ramp to get on the bus, does it have one, or does it 'kneel' as some newer buses do). Buses that have wheelchair lifts won't always let people who are not in some sort of seat use them. The steps up may be pretty steep. That's all I can think of now, but if more comes to mind, I'll write another message. Congratulations to your daughter acceptance into numerous universities. She is obviously very bright and should do well. Is she by any chance planning to major in psychology? (That's my area.) Sherry > > My daughter has been excepted into every college she applied to > including UC Diego and UC Berkeley. She will be looking at disability access at both schools over the next several weeks and making her mind up pretty soon. The disabled services seem great at both places maybe a little better at Berkeley. After the discrimination she faced in high school she wants to make sure she chooses and friendly campus. > Any advice is appreciated. > > > >
Guest guest
Hey Sherry, The synchronicity of your letter takes my breath away... I was just thinking about applying to UT and going back to school to get a counseling degree. (I live near Knoxville.) Your note about the difficulties on campus definitely adds a dimension to my thought process. Great letter, by the way, full of incredibly helpful suggestions. Best, Lynna > >
Guest guest
Lynna, thanks for your comment. If you want to reach me and ask questions about UT, go ahead and e-mail me at sbain2@.... I don't actually think that my e-mail attached to this group (the address) works. Sherry > > Hey Sherry, > > The synchronicity of your letter takes my breath away... Guest guest
Thank you Sherry, I will forward your email onto . I don't know why I am having so much anxiety about the campus? I guess it is from the high school practicing discrimination the past two years. So far both colleges sounds very accommodating.
