Guest guest
Hi Janet: Sorry o hear you are having such a rought time. I am sure you had a good reason to take yourself off Paxil, and I am not disputing your judgement, but as a nurse I feel obligated to urge you to see your doc and perhaps get some other antideprresant that doesn't do what you dislike about Paxil. If there is any particular side effect or reason you don't like about Paxil, I implore you to talk to your doc and perhaps find something that will work for you. I hope I am not stepping out of bounds by "preaching", but considering possible alternatives, I hope you'll will forgive me, once. love tedA
Guest guest
Debby, I take Zoloft, and according to my doctor it is safe for the liver. I have had no side effects from it, and it has helped so much. I hope you can get one that works good for you Debby. Love Ya Lots, Ruth tdcc <tdcc2000@...> wrote: Hi folks. It apparently was the pharmacy's problem....they SAID that someone probably had punched in the incorrect number for refill and it ended up at my GI's office...sounded fishy to me! Anyway, I mentioned the nurse that I had been changed from Effexor to Wellbutrin and that if it was not a 'liver friendly' medication, to let me know. WELL....the GI called on Friday and was quite upset that I am on it. Grrrrrr.....she wants me BACK on Effexor. I told her that I just won't go back to that medication because it a bear to get off. It has been nearly 3 weeks and I am still having problems from discontinuing that medication. Apparently, Wellbutrin is very toxic to the liver at the dosage that I am on. So, my question is, do any of you have any suggestions as to which antidepressant IS liver friendly? ANy input would be truly appreciated. If none other is available, then I will just go off antidepressants altogether rather than go back to Effexor. Debby
Guest guest
Debby, I am on Wellbutrin SR 150 mg twice a day. I actually began taking it in August, months prior to finding out I have AIH. None of my doctors have said anything about the wellbutrin being a problem for my liver. I have thought about asking if an SSRI antidepressant would be better for me since I've read that liver disease can impact your serotonin level. Guest guest
, that is sort of what I was wondering. I knew Effexor was bad for the liver, and had actually stopped it, but now, I don't think I will take anything. I am truly frustrated! Too many doctors...too many illnesses....not enough knowledge! Guest guest
Thank you . I appreciate your kind words. However, we are now very involved with The Compassionate Friends, an international support group that offers help to any people who are living with the death of their child. It saved our lives, and now, we are passing along the support we received and giving back to those who are going through their grief. It is still helpful to us to see how FAR we have come in our grief!!! Debby Re: [ ] Antidepressants Debby,I am sorry to hear about your son. What a tremendou heartbreak it must be!! I do not know of any antidepressants people with liver problems should not take. As I am fairly new to this, I am learning a lot from reading everyone's posts. I'm sure antidepressants will be an issue for me down the road though so I am grateful to be learning so much from this group.Blessings,

Guest guest
Dear Jeannie, If I took antidepressants, I would take them to help with the multi tasking, reading, and other cognitive skills. Right now, the TV in the other room is playing a Christmas program and I need to get up and turn it off, because I am really having a problem focusing on what I am typing with the interference of the TV. The program is great. It is uplifting. The problem is not being able to do two things at once at this time. I don't know if antidepressants would help with that or not. A neuro at UCSF seemed to think the antidepressants would help with the stamina. I was out of breath and exhausted just from walking from the parking lot to her office. Have any of you found antidepressants to help in these areas? Thanks,
Guest guest
Your message has been edited. Please read the file entitled " Cleaning " Instructions found at /files/ for more information. Lyme Aid Owner A very nice SSRI that you might try is Lexapro. It is a second generation Celexa. The problem may be with cost. Lexapro, by report, has less side effects (loss of sex drive etc) than the others. Paxil is also a good anti-d. It is used for people that lean toward OCD behaviors. I don't know what dose of prozac you are on. I do know that with Lexapro you start at 10mg and do plateau now and again and need to increase the dose. SSRI's are lifesavers for so many people. As Dupont used to say " Better living through chemistry " of course we may have to change it to " Better living through chemicals " ....hmmm....luck in your house and yes, lyme is awful. Last summer, my mail order pharmacy messed up and I did not get my RX in time and I had a lapse in treatment. I took half the dose for 4 days (every other day) and was off the medication for another 5 days. I cried at the drop of a hat and just could not function well without that help.It took me more than a month back on the medication to feel better. Won't let that happen again. A question for all of you - I have been on Prozac since it was out - just about - and have not tried any of the newer drugs. If anyone has had a good or bad experience, I'd like hearing from you to see if I should consider it. Thank you all for all your input - you're a lifeline for me - especially when things get rough. Guest guest
Hi Ann, I was on Prozac prior to having Lyme and it did help, the Dr switched me to Serzone for a few months with little effect. Eventually I was put on Celexa (post Lyme infection) which does quite well, and much better than Prozac. The Dr added Wilburton to the mix about 2 years ago and that is the winning combination for me. I have read that a lot of people have had problems with Wilburton but I never have. Unless you feel that Prozac isn't helping as much as it used to I would probably stay with what works. Most of my changing around was due to potential medication interactions with other meds I was starting to take at the time, not that they didn't work. It wasn't until they started the double therapy of Celexa and Wilburton that I started feeling like my old self. I know when and where my tick bite occurred so I was on antidepressants before that, which was more related to family issues and work than any other cause. Guest guest
Dear Ann, I've been on anti depressants and anti anxiety meds since 1988 after initial infection with Lyme. After a year or so, I tried Prozac and it worked very well -- at low dosages like 20mgs. Acouple of times my docs upped the dosage to 40mgs, but that was when I was experiencing a major flare up AND an external event, like my father's death, etc. Then, I went back to my lower dosage. The prozac worked well for years. I, too, tried to go off it -- that old denial thing of " Hey, I don't need meds! " The strongest thing I ever took before Lyme was aspirin and a low dose at that. Last March or so, I discovered that I was severely depressed and called my psych, who is also a pharmacologiest and a strong advocate of supplements in addition to psychotropics. He decided that Prozac wasn't doing the trick any more and switched me to Effexor sr -- low dosage of 37.5 or 38.5 mgs (I forget which -- lol). Anyway, that did the trick. My suggestion is that as long as a med is working for you, keep taking it. Believe me, you'll know when it stops working! Blessings, > > > A question for all of you - I have been on Prozac since it was out - just about - and have not tried any of the newer drugs. Guest guest
There are many treatments that can help with depression that aren't drugs. Homeopath & NAET are some good ones. Guest guest
: I have had pregnant patients on Zoloft and psychologically speaking they have done fine. If it were me, however, I think I would try some Fish Oil capsules to see if that would lift your mood before I would try the Zoloft unless there are consistent suicidal thoughts. Fish Oil capsules have been documented in the research to help depression as well as antidepressants. Also, regular daily exercise such as walking for at least half an hour a day has been shown to be as effective for depression as antidepressants. Sounds to easy to be true, but it is. Guest guest
Not in this lifetime.... Personally, I would rather be depressed than taking Zoloft when pregnant. Omega 3 fish oil, Cod liver oil, cal/mag/zinc & a good pre-natal vitamin worked for my pregnancy blues. -GA [ ] antidepressants Has anyone on this group ever taken antidepressants while pregnant? Guest guest
I have a friend who was taking zoloft before getting pregnant and continued through the pregnancy with no notable ill affects on her or the baby. If the depression is new to you -- didn't occur pre-pregnancy -- has your doc checked your hormonal levels? Low progesterone and other hormonal imbalance can certainly lead to feelings of depression along with other problems during pregnancy. You might also try charting your depression with what you're eating to see if some hidden food allergies are showing up more now that your body is carrying an extra load. Guest guest
I always went OFF my antidepressants before getting pregnant, although I WAS on them when I got pregnant with my first (an " oops " ). I say do whatever you can to stay off of them, but in the long run you might need to make a tough decision and take some Zoloft. I will tell you this: I went off of my last (and will always be my last!) antidepressant 2 months ago. It was HELL coming off of Effexor. 6 months prior to going off meds, I started taking Omega 3 fatty acids religiously. I feel better OFF of antidepressants than I ever did ON them. I credit the EFAs 110%. I use Nordic Naturals Complete Omega. I think it was Dr. Mercola who stated he thought many cases of Autism could be prevented if expectant moms took EFAs before and during pregnancy/nursing. Don't know if it can be that simple, but the essential fatty acids are certainly deficient in our diets. I have a great friend who took Zoloft while pregnant with 2 of her 3 kids. Both are not Autistic. They do have a speech issue. Her oldest also had some small issues with speech clarity, so it is likely not the Zoloft. I suppose you aren't asking if zoloft can cause Autism. Exercise, eat well, take EFAs and get proper amounts of sleep. Unless you are at risk for hurting yourself or others, I'd advocate staying away from antidepressants.
