Hi Amy,

In 1998, between June 30 and September 25, I had both double hip and double

knee

replacement surgeries due to psoriatic arthritis. Since I had so many

operations so

close together, it took me until January 25, 1999, before I could walk up a

flight of steps to my second floor bedroom. Now, I can walk unassisted

within my home, but I use a walker when traveling outside. I am a 58 year

old man who lives in

Washington, DC. If you have any more questions, I will try to answer them.

Sincerely,

Bill in DC

Hi Amy,

I have had total knee replacement surgery on both of

my knees, I too was scared to death the first one I

had done so, heres what I did....I ask lots of

questions about it and then when they did the

surgery...I told them I'd rather stay grogged but not

go completly out so, I could let them know if I could

feel it at all and to just know what was going on.

afterward...I must say it CAN be pretty painfull but,

it's good to move the knee as soon as possible so you

won't loose the movement in it. they do better than

shoulder replacements do ( so I'm told) and mine are

doing well so far.

it's scarry but worth it. hang tough and I'll be here

for you to talk to when ever you need me.

good luck , R.

P.S. that goes for every one in this group...I love

the info that I get and helping you peoples out when I

can.

Thanks to those who have replied. I know that I am not a candidate for a total

knee replacement at this time since I am still in my twenties. I'm just trying

to gather as much information as I can before my next rhuemy visit. My right

knee gave out on me a little over a week ago and I am using crutches and pain

killers so that I can make through until my appointment on the 29th. The bad

thing about most rhuemies is that they are are so busy that you can't always get

in to see them when you need it the most.

My knee surgeon is the best Columbia Presbyterian in NYC has to offer and he

says that I will be in hospital for three days, on crutches for three weeks,

with physical therapy starting ASAP. The PA had started to invade the

injured patella with the tendons getting so inflamed that you could hear the

crunching across the room if I vent the knee at all, or if I attempted to go

up any stairs. It will be an open knee surgery to move the patella back into

position.

Thanks for all the prayers and support,

Hi Sheila,

My Father-in-law had knee replacement in Feb 02 and has had some

problems with his knee since then. I was talking to someone on line

a while back and they informed me there was a law suit filed for

people that had knee surgery between Feb 02 and Sept 03 dealing with

total knee replacement with the cement less procedure. I'm not sure

at this point if my father in law had that type of procedure. I'm

looing into it and was given a website to look into to see if he

fell into this category for the lawsuit. Have you heard of this

lawsuit or know of anyone that has. And if you have, what can you

tell me about it?

The website I was told to look on is:

http://totalkneereplacement.info/

This site explains details and complications of the cement less

procedure.

Thanks in advance for any information or help.

Sherry.

clean out my knee..He said he will be doing more than he would

normally do for this type of surgery..but your words are very

encouraging!!! Thanks for writing!!

Dear all,

I would like to know your opinion about a surgery recommended by a reputed

orthopedic surgeon in India, for me as I have walking difficulty due to abnormal

gait and high knee hyperextension. While walking, my knees come closer to each

other (Valgus knee). He has also suggested that after the surgery I will have to

use knee bases with my AFOs which I'm using for last 25 years.

Surgery details are as follows:

Adv: Surgery followed by knee brace (supracondylar osteotomy) varus flexion to

correct the mechanical Axis.

Please let me know your views. What are the chances of improvement of gait after

this surgery? What are the risk factors? Do you have any recommendations?

Thanks & Regards,

- Leena

I think it's SOP to take a blood thinner for several weeks after a joint

replacement. I took coumadin by pill, though I did a shot of something else

before I left the hospital. Then you're switched over to aspirin.

I took the shots. wasn't a month tho,, more like 2 weeks.. didn't need to get

tested like when you are on cumiden..

did bruise some on the stomach but really didn't hurt to do it.. guess I had to

much stomach fat.. :-)

All the same here. With my pill version test your blood regularly at

specified day to day intervals for x period of tme so they know if your

appropriate dosage is to remain the same or if to be increased or decreased.
