Guest guest
Dear Vicky, Thank you for your kind words. My heart breaks for the loss we have both suffered, and I understand everything you are saying. I was unable to secure legal assistance, but no matter. Like you, I have determined that going public is the best thing we can do. I admire you for your determination to do so. If we can educate even one family to the truth so that it will help them to avoid putting their own child on any of these dangerous drugs, then all of our efforts- even if it takes our whole life, will not have been in vain, and this will be the legacy which our children leave behind. I would very much like to post Shaina's story on our new and upcoming website in a section reserved to tell these stories of tragedy. May I have your permission to do so? This is our new site: http://www.aspire.us We have only just begun, but we intend to reach every school, every religious institution in the nation, and re-educate the public. Guest guest
You really should have added a warning to your post....Don't read if you are experiencing PMS!!! Lots of tissues. This is a story that was in the omaha paper yesterday, A very good story. Please read Wrestlers share magical moment BY CRAIG SESKER WORLD-HERALD BUREAU LINCOLN - Lincoln East Coach Marty McCurdy's wrestling room is loaded with talent. Lincoln East's Trevor Howe executes a single-leg takedown against East Assistant Coach Zakaras on Tuesday. But one of McCurdy's wrestlers for the two-time defending Class A champion Spartans never will experience the thrill of stepping on the mat to compete in a state tournament. East freshman Trevor Howe has Down syndrome, a genetic, chromosomal disorder. The result is mental retardation and an inability to develop motor skills fully. Just doing a simple forward roll is difficult for the 15-year-old. " Wrestling is a struggle for Trevor, " McCurdy said. " Trevor's condition makes coordination difficult at times, and it makes it difficult for him to use all of his strength at the right time. " But last Saturday, Trevor was able to experience the thrill of a lifetime when he stepped on the mat and earned a victory. All thanks to the generosity, class and compassion displayed by a selfless 17-year-old Kearney High School senior who showed maturity and grace far beyond his years. Howe, top, wrestles against Kearney's Teel last Saturday. McCurdy had sent an e-mail to Kearney Coach Tom McCann and Assistant Coach Dennis asking if one of the Kearney wrestlers would compete against Trevor in a junior varsity match while agreeing not to pin him for two periods and promising not to hurt him. Kearney's Teel, a backup 189-pounder for the Bearcats, agreed to compete and provide enough resistance to allow 5-foot-2, 180-pound Trevor to experience what a competitive six-minute match feels like. Teel went one step further than anybody expected, allowing Trevor to win the match. He allowed Trevor to turn him to his back with a half-nelson hold and record a third-period pin. " That was really fun, " Trevor said. McCurdy said he was " real surprised " Teel allowed Trevor to win the match, which came during a triangular at Lincoln East with Kearney and Millard North. " We just wanted to let Trevor experience wrestling in a competitive match, " McCurdy said. " Their coaches didn't tell he had to lose, but that was very neat what he did. " Kearney and Lincoln East fans stood and cheered both wrestlers after the match. " In my mind, is a true champion in the hearts of the East High wrestling family, " McCurdy said. " He is a tribute to the excellent coaches at Kearney. He gave the sport of wrestling a victory. " McCann, in his 37th season of coaching, said it was a memorable experience. " I got a little teary-eyed, " said McCann, whose team is ranked No. 2 behind East. " It was worth it to see that young man jump up and down and hug his coach and hug his dad. The whole place went crazy. I have had so many great experiences as a coach, but I have never seen anything like this. " When McCurdy made his request to the Kearney coaches to find an opponent for his wrestler, , a longtime Bearcat assistant, went to work. " I thought, wow, this is going to take a special kid to do this, " said. " We wanted to give the kid a match to remember. I told we were not going to pin the kid. I think during the course of the match decided to let the kid pin him. I told I bet he never thought he would get a standing ovation for getting pinned. That was a once-in-a-lifetime moment. " McCurdy alerted referee Bob Meeker of Omaha as to what was transpiring before the match. Teel said he couldn't bring himself to win the match. " He was really working - he was trying so hard, " Teel said. " I was supposed to win on points in the third period, but I didn't think it would be right for me to beat him. It ended up being better this way anyway. " Teel, who also won a match on Saturday, said he " had no idea " he would receive so much recognition for what he did. " It has been awesome, " Teel said. " The fans gave both of us a standing ovation, and I think everyone in the gym came up and shook my hand after the match. It was pretty neat. I was just glad I could help out. " The victory was just an added bonus for Trevor. " I am not sure Trevor understood he won at first, " said McCurdy, wife of the East coach. " He had so much fun, I don't think he really cared if he won or lost. " Among those applauding were Trevor's parents, Dr. Howe and his wife, Laurie, who were attending their first wrestling meet. is a Lincoln urologist. They thanked Teel after the match. " What did was the ultimate show of sportsmanship and humility, " Laurie said. " To have the referee raise Trevor's arm, have the crowd cheering and have his teammates cheering, that was a very emotional moment. It was really touching. We were so proud. " Trevor was not told of the coaches' agreement. " Trevor legitimately in his mind won that match, " Laurie said. " He still doesn't realize what really happened. He was just so proud he could win a match for his team. That was a huge thrill for him. It turned out to be a wonderful moment. It was magical. " The Howes have four children. Only Trevor, their second-oldest child, was born with a birth defect. Older sister , 17, is a senior at Lincoln Pius X. His younger sister, , 12, is a seventh-grader. His brother, Bryce, 11, is in fifth grade. is involved in music. competes in basketball, soccer and swimming. Bryce plays tennis. " Trevor is very, very supportive of his siblings, " Laurie said. " He is the No. 1 cheerleader for them at whatever activity they do. That's why this was so great for him. He finally got a chance to compete, and his siblings really supported him. " Said Trevor: " My brother was like 'Go Trevor' after I won. " Trevor is a first-year wrestler. He had an interesting reaction when he tried on his singlet before his match. " I looked like a dork, " Trevor said. He lifted weights with Coach McCurdy during the fall to prepare for the season. He also had a number of one-on-one wrestling sessions with his coach. " Trevor loves sports, " Laurie said. " We were looking for something he could be involved in. We have known Coach McCurdy for a number of years. He extended an invitation and said he would love to work with Trevor. Marty's been great. " Trevor attends a regular physical education class in school, but he has to attend special-needs courses in reading and math. His mother said he reads at a first-grade level. Howe said members of the Lincoln East team make it a point to include Trevor when the team gets together off the mat. " It's unbelievable how those kids treat Trevor, " said. " Those guys have done a tremendous amount for Trevor. His whole self-esteem has just gone way up. He is walking a lot taller now. "

On the Web at http://CLOS.NET Now Located in Las Vegas, Nevada NEWS STORY Hi there! I'm looking forward to meeting you tomorrow morning. I spoke with Trish this morning, and she asked me to arrive by about 9:30 a.m. at the St. Rose De Lima campus, so I'll see you there. I've received a number of e-mails from patients, but with the exception of Lance Wolf, none of them has been local. I'd really like to profile someone local who has undergone this surgery and can discuss how much better they feel, how much weight they've lost, how they're on fewer meds - that sort of thing. I'd also like to profile someone who is going to have the surgery soon - so that we have both the " before' and the " after " to show our viewers. Ideally, both of these people would be women; our audiences are dominated by females, so when practical, we address issues from their perspective. This in-depth story is scheduled to air at 11 pm on Thursday, February 2nd. That's three weeks from THIS Thursday. So, if practical, I'd like to videotape this story over the next two-and-a-half weeks, with a suggested deadline of Thursday, January 26th for completing the taping. We can certainly discuss this further tomorrow. See you then! Jay Special Projects Producer Channel 13 Action News KTNV-TV 3355 S. Guest guest
oh god i feel for both families .i hope they do not try him as an adult or for the death penalty or life .he needs constant supervison more than likely in a mental place ( i forget what they are called sorry about the use of mental place ). you are right this is what people will think of people with autism /aspergers or any other spectrum disorders .they do not teach public awareness on this subject .so the only info they have of it is what they see /hear in the media.i wish the nami org or someother org like this can raise the public awareness of autism spectrum disorders and all of what it entails so that people will not fear it. you only fear the unknown. both families are in my thoughts and prayers .and the students as well. News Story Stories like this freak me out because it leaves people with the impression that this is what people with Asperger’s/Autism are all like. There needs to be some kind of remark stating that it isn’t in stories such as these. This happened an hour from us. - Charlotte http://news. / s/wcvb/20070120/ lo_wcvb/10792195 Bored stiff? Guest guest
Charlotte, It's always heartbreaking to hear stories like this, whether the suspect had Asperger's or not. Here in Atlanta we had a case two years ago in which a 13-year-old girl prepared a cake (prepared with bleach, glue, tabasco sauce, playdough, and medication pills) and brought it to school to offer to classmates. No one died, but many students were rushed to the E.R. for medical treatment. The girl and her accomplice were reassigned to another school. The girl's father told the press he suspected his daughter had Asperger's Syndrome, but it turned out she was never officially diagnosed. http://badanimal6.blogspot.com/2004/12/ap-wire-12012004-committee-mental.html We should think of some way to respond to this news story. Asperger's itself does not cause people to become violent. Some children with AS become easy targets for bullying, which if not controlled by school officials, can fester and eventually a child may try to become more assertive.....and in an extreme case, resort to violence. Still, even with AS, a person knows the difference between right and wrong. Asperger's affects one's view of the world around them, but it does not impair a learned sense of morality which is instilled by loving parents and supporting teachers. I taught middle school for a couple years and one day one of my sixth-grade students (who had Aspergers) brought a small 1.5-inch knife to school. When asked why he had it, he explained that two boys had said they were going to beat him up on the bus after school that day and he said he wanted to be able to defend himself just in case. He was almost in tears, but per school policy, he was suspended for a couple days. When he got back, I personally told him (as I'm certain the principal and counselor did also) if anyone ever threatened him again to tell a teacher or an administrator. Parents and school officials should shoulder most of the responsibility for issues of bullying and weapons being brought onto school property. >From: " Charlotte " <cscottdesigns@...> >Reply-Autism and Aspergers Treatment > " Charlotte " <cscottdesigns@...> >Subject: News Story >Date: Fri, 19 Jan 2007 22:41:48 -0500 > >Stories like this freak me out because it leaves people with the impression >that this is what people with Asperger's/Autism are all like. He has Asperger's, and the news is quick to say that. From what they said on the news, it seems that this boy's obsessions surrounded weapons and violence. He is being tried as an adult, and being made out to look like a complete monster. This is not good for public perception of our children, and it just breaks my heart. News Story Stories like this freak me out because it leaves people with the impression that this is what people with Asperger's/Autism are all like. Guest guest
you know it sickens me when every law tells a boy/girl under the age of 18 they cant do stuff cuz they are not old enough they are not an adult they have to be 18 or to drink for christ sake 21 but if they do a crime at that age then they are an adult and are tried as an adult .if that is the case then let them drive at 10 and let them smoke and buy alcohol and getinto bars at 10 also(i think there was one case where the kids were 13 ish and they were going to try as adults.in a country where a kid can hunt at 12 and buy a gun at 18 but cant buy the bullets til 21 (i saw the sign in a walmart) we send mixed signals on how old you must be to be an adult or do an adult thing. NO ONE UNDER THE AGE OF 18 SHOULD BE TRIED AS AN ADULT.why? cuz they aint adults. as to this child whne in a case like this and it is proven that he has a disorder like aspergers or someother forn that limits a comprehension of what they are doing .they def should not be treated as an adult.what is the world coming to when we hurt the ones we should be helping the most. now i dont mean let the child wonder around on the strreets but put him in a place that will protect others from being hurt by him but also will help him with his disorders prison where he would go will only kill a child or make him the monster everyone already thinks he is now to the media and their throwing things out there and making everyone fear soemthing because their total disregard to the aspergers/autistic comuunities if a person who commits a crime has a disorder do not just say oh the child suffers from aspergers and that is why he did it or words to that effect they need to expalin what it is and what happens to a person with it .and what would happen to a person with it behind bars. WHERE ARE THE ORGANISATIONS THAT KEEP SAYING WE NEED TO BE HEARD AND SO FORTH WHY ARE THEY NOT STANDING UP FOR THESE KIDS.WE HAVE THE NAACP STANDING UP MAKING SURE MINORITIES GET HEARD AND TREATED FAIRLY .WHAT ABOUT THE MENTAL HEALTH COMMUNITIES WE DESERVE A VOICE ALSO.THEY NEED TO BE UP THERE WITH THAT BOY HELPING HIM . sorry once again for the long soap box this is just a big pet peeve of mine .it seems like the only time ORGANIZATIONS stand up is for when it is for NIMBY (NOT IN MY BACK YARD !!! THANK YOU GEORGE CARLIN) well i wish both families comfort in their times of sorrow . Guest guest
Hi Notan Yes, I read the News Of The World article. I was astonished and amazed when I turned the page in this newspaper and saw the word ACHALASIA. Very interesting. Pity that it didn't give any more details about the illness though. ________________________________ From: notan ostrich <notan_ostrich@...> achalasia Sent: Thursday, February 12, 2009 4:44:39 AM Subject: News story This is a link to a news story about a lady who could only eat chocolate. Guest guest
And don't expect them to, Notan. Â Two things to remember - not all those comments will have been from achalasians. They probably haven't the foggiest idea what they are talking about. Â Secondly, having achalasia doesn't immediately transform you into a good and compassionate person. There will be people, you can bet your bottom dollar, both in our Group and otherwise, that you would never in " real life " choose to associate with. Â Personally I am grateful for those people who ARE knowledgable and/or compassionate. As for the rest, I feel sorry for them that they are not able to give of themselves to help others. They are missing out on a big treasure. Â And BTW, the newspaper that this story came from is not one that I would recommend to serious-thinking people, if you know what I mean?
