Guest guest
What about those of us with little or no flexibility? I used to sit tailor-style on the floor six mos. ago, but now I can't do it, " cause it hurts. Jane brightt@... wrote: , Here are just a few names of yoga & other videos for gentle movement/exercise to get you started. Definitely check Amazon.com and eBay to see if you can find used or low-priced copies. (I always check both of them first before paying full price.) Also, look for terms like " chair yoga " or " gentle yoga " --usually used for types of yoga specifically for folks with disabilities. Check the Arthritis Foundation website, too. They have *many* resources. Ageless Yoga - Joint Freedom by Schlorholtz ( has other excellent tapes that can benefit people with RA too) Sit and Be Fit for Arthritis (I found my copy on eBay) [Qigong] Arthritis - the Chinese Way of Healing and Prevention by Dr. Yang, Jwing-Ming (some of these exercises I leave out because they are too challenging for my knees, but others are lovely) Exercise Can Beat Arthritis Move Those Joints Flexible Strength & Vitality - Joint Freeing Series (Structural Yoga Therapy) Alice Christensen (Easy Does It Yoga)- I've used her books but haven't tried any of her videos; I'm sure they'd be good. Wishing you happy & pain-free stretches - Prakasha

When I got RA and found that I couldn't do most of what I had taken for granted, I got very discouraged and spent several years not doing any exercise or yoga. . .just mourning what I *used to be able to do.* Soooo, I became completely out of shape. Now, I'm trying to do movement and exercise again. But now, I'm coming from a whole different place--an out-of-shape person with a disability who really must find ways to exercise. Gone are the days when I sat in a comfortable cross-legged position. I cannot get down on the floor and be sure I'll be able to get up again! So, I do exercises from a chair, standing or lying on my bed. . .and some days I do only what I can do sitting or lying down. All of the tapes I listed are for us!!! They are for people who cannot easily bend, twist, stretch, etc. They are verrrry gentle. Some have pictures on their cover of people in chairs or even with walkers. Some are yoga and some are other types of exercise. They do *not* require you to sit cross-legged, stand on your head, or do anything like a pretzel! You might want to browse on Amazon.com or andnoble.com and read the complete descriptions for these tapes along with the reviews people leave for each one. Also, be sure to see what tapes, etc. are listed on the Arthritis Foundation site (arthritis.org). By the way, there are certainly many other great tapes that I don't know about. I'd love to hear about it if you find some others you recommend.
