I'm on Arava (Leflunomide is the generic name) which is supposed to be similar to MTX. Don't know that it's working yet, as I've only been on it for two weeks. (I have gotten some relief but it's not supposed to really work for 2-4 weeks.) No side effect, tho...

Guest guest
I was on Arava a few times and the terrible heartburn and nausea killed it for me. The double dose of Prevacid didn't even help. Tomorrow is my MTX day. I have been loading up on folic acid in hopes it will curb the nausea. In the morning I plan to clean, clean, clean incase I am sick in bed all week like I was last week. Shandi [ ] MTX alternatives > Is mtx that bad? Because if its that nasty, I wont take it. Guest guest
Arava worked very well for me, and I had none of the side effects others have mentioned. I had to stop it because my white blood cell count got too low. Methotrexate had already lowered it considerably before I started Arava. That was the only side effect I had from methotrexate, too. It's strange how different we all are in the way we react to medications. Guest guest
i changed from mtx which was so bad to arava. i find arava so much better even though it has its side effects. <kyrik@...> wrote: > Is mtx that bad? Guest guest
Glad to hear that Arava is agreeing with you more than MTX did, Joe; however, there isn't a body of evidence to indicate that, for RA patients in general, Arava is either more effective or has a more favorable side-effect profile than methotrexate. Also, methotrexate has been used for RA for many more years than Arava has - a considerable advantage where monitoring is concerned. Too, Arava costs much more than MTX.
