Guys, I'll see a rhuemy for the first time on Tues. Being a specialist,

and being my first visit, I know they will do something foul that I

won't like. Would someone please tell me what happens when you meet

your rheumy for the first time? Thank You very much for sharing.

JAne.

Jane, Please don' be afraid. At the first visit they may only ask

questions, look at your joints that are bothering you, review blood wrk or

take

some depending on the office. i have to get my bloodwork done at a separate

place...X rays, family history ect. My rheumy drew some fluid from my knee to

look at it also. It was no big deal. HUGS relax it will be ok.

Hi Jane;

I had the same experience as --see below. No big deal. Getting the fluid

from the knee is very unpleasant and you will get instant relief, that's it.

This is actually a tip from my son, a orthopaedic surgeon. What he recommends

is that, prior to your apppointment, make a list of questions you want to ask

your MD, your concerns. First visits can be overwhelming and you might forget to

ask something that is important to you.

Good luck.

Jane - My Rheumatoligist was very aggressive

and had me try quite afew drug combos. He listened

and understood where I was coming from. I was a

physical mess in constant pain walking with a cane,

could not make a fist or turn a key. He refers to me

as one of his successes. I wish you the same good

fortune.

Nothing foul. They might feel your joints and check your range of motion,

Talk to you about how you feel and set you up for lab tests. in WI

Jane, my rheumy has never done anything foul to me! Except

draining the fluid from my knee, or giving me a cortisone injection,

maybe. Neither is a lot of fun, but the results are well worth it.

Be prepared to give your rheumy your entire history, and any meds you

take. It helped me to write it all down ahead of time, then look at

again a day later, to make sure I hadn't left anything out. Also any

allergies, reactions to meds, and definitely any family history of

autoimmune disorders that you may know about. Any stress in your

life. What helps and what doesn't. etc. etc. etc. The more you can

tell him, the better. THen he'll probably want to run lots of tests.

My rheumy didn't do anything until my second visit, after he had all

my tests.

If you're like me, it will be such a relief to get a diagnosis and

begin treatment. Good luck!

I wouldn't worry, if you even are? Going to a rheumy

is a good thing!!! They are specialists in our area

of ailment. They are detectives on our behalf so to

speak. On my 1st. visit - they had sent prior forms

for basic information b4 the visit. You just simply

fill them out and usually send them back b4 your

actual appointment. You go and basically familiarize

yourself with them and usually get to do the lovely

bloodwork-ups and possibly some x-rays. Depending on

what ails you - you most likely will not be diagnoised

that visit. However, on the flip side - you might!

Which again is a good thing! The sooner, the better!

It is all kinda overwhelming and scary, but I think it

more the process of it all and not just the sight of a

rheumy. AR! AR! How long have you been going through

all of this? Try to be in tune with your various

features of whatever ails you and keep a journal of

symptoms, length of flares, whether you feel tired, no

energy, feverish, upset tummy, hair loss, on and on.

It helps you see any patterns, etc.. When I went the

1st. time - I had no idea why they would send me there

and wasn't informed well enough to know what to do or

say. Now, a little of 4 years later....I'm fiinally

ready to provide valuable information regarding the

features of what is going on with me and hopefully

will get some answers and if I am lucky - some

relief!!! Good luck! God Bless Kim
