Joan, this is a tragedy beyond words. My condolences and prayers for the family.

I cannot begin to imagine how they could ever be consoled. And as their friend,

you must be grieving with them. I am so sorry.

Dear Joan, if you have any information of how we can send a card.....it sounds so small in light of how very very sad and tragic this is , but still, I would like to do that and I am sure others would too.....as Beth said, you must be grieving with them since you know them, and I am so, so sorry...AnnieTo: From: ppaul1@...Date: Thu, 23 Feb 2012 02:28:09 +0000Subject: Re: Tragic loss

Thanks everyone for your kind words. In following the story a bit (I've not bothered his family but to send a card), one of the things that was disturbing was to learn t hat the regulations around  trash chutes in buildings like that are focused on preventing fires in the building and not on safety precautions so that this doesn't happen. It is about 4 feet up on the wall or so, but Charlie was a tall, skinny young man. When REx and I saw a photo of it, we both said " it looks like a slide. "

Does anyone live in a building with somethng like that? If so, what do you do for safety?I am thinking that this is not super common issue for kids - any kids - because it's not where the majority of people live...(high rise buildings).

Thoughts?AS for where to send gifts or cards, i can't answer that. This is a very private family, so the fact that it was all over the news is a layer of invasion they're not accustomed to. One thought is to send any cards or donations to the SOI Headquarters, but that's sort of removed (he was once on the board of directors and is still close with Dr. Shriver.)  They do give out their address in the news story, but, again........it's a private family. I 'm waiting to hear if they share where donations can be sent.

HI Joan ...thanks if you hear let us know...I was thinking the trash thing would be something even "non special needs kids" could be tempted to fiddle with, and as you said, if it looked like a slide that sure would appeal to a child with limited understanding...just soo sad...I am putting myself in that situation...I cannot eve say if I would careless about cards or support from strangers...it is just such a terrible accident and must be the toughest thing in the world to process even with faith.......To: From: joan.medlen@...Date: Thu, 23 Feb 2012 10:37:28 -0800Subject: Re: Re: Tragic loss

In many ways, I think an outpouring from strangers is inevitable since their address was announced on the news. I am just not comfortable broadcasting that! Joan
