Guest guest
i am finding all of this diet information fascinating and a little overwhelming....nick's diet consists of wheat and dairy and i am not kidding it's ALL wheat and dairy...here i am merrily giving him multivits because he doesn't eat a good variety of foods and then i see this about the vitamins. it seems as though i just don't know enough and i turn to the doctors about diet/nutrition info and they look at me as if i'm speaking in some nonunderstandable language and look at me as though i am this poor mother to be pitied...like i think switching his diet will make him not autistic and miraculously " cure " the down syndrome. what i cannot make them realize is that we are not looking for a cure...nick is nick and we love him for him which is why we are always trying to do stuff to make him healthier and happier. why do we as parents constantly have to dig for every tiny bit of information? i feel it in my bones that nick's autism has something to do with his diet or vice versa...not everything i am sure but there is something there. i still am not really sure what the " full autism " diet is that you are referring to, but i do know that there are certain things in nick's behavior that are changing since we have begun to decrease the wheat in his diet....we are slowly replacing the cream of wheat with cream of buckwheat which has no wheat, gluten or casein (contrary to its name). can't do anything too fast with dietary changes...nick watches us like a hawk when it comes to his food!!!!!!!!! i would love to know if anyone has had positive results using diet................and thank you for the heads up on the vitamins...i'll check brands etc. Re: Diet > In the discussion of vitamin therapy, it made me wonder , has anyone tried > the Autism diet with thier child? > I do not mean just for celiac, I mean the entire Autism diet. And if so > could you post any results you may or may not have seen. I would very much > like to see the results this diet has on children with the duel disability > of DS/ASD . > > > thank you so much. > > L. Hi , In regards to your wondering mind . My son is 12 yrs. old , DS- ASD . When he was around 7 yrs. old , I had him try the Nutrivene Supplements w/out the Piracetam . Results were not good according to his Elementary Teacher , he seemed more aggressive . I tossed it out . Had him try the Flinstone Vit., nope , more behavior problems .Now at the age of 12 , I decided to try the Flinstone vit., again , no changes . Now, he is under medication ,which I did not care for , but it is helping him sleep through the nights . Wakes up fine . I attended the Second Annual Medical Conference on Autism " What Can We Do Now " , these are some info I picked up : Most commerically available children's vitamins , however , contain allergens that may be more harmful to an AUTISTIC child . For ex., retail vit.commonly include artificial flavors and colors, corn derivaties, casein, soy and other products to which many AUTISTIC are allergic or sensitive to .Visit www.immunolabs.com for more info. or request for a newsletter from www.kirkmanslabs.com .Hope this helps . Oh, I forgot to mention he is taking Nature's Code Multi- Vitamin/Multi-Mineral Formula , a dietary supplement . No preservatives, artificial sweeteners, colors or flavors . This info has helped my son . Irma from SA,Tx.( 12 yrs. old , DS-ASD ) http://www.onelist.com/community/
Guest guest
Hi there, I'm new to this group. My son, Tristan, almost 4 years old, has DS and shows signs of autism - he stims and has sensory issues. I'm wondering if anyone heard of the GAPS diet? I've recently just heard about both SCD and GAPS and am trying to decide if either is the right way for us to go. I was initially just looking into gluten free and then a friend pointed me in this direction. I'd love any info/comments/thoughts!Thank you!Dawn
Guest guest
Dawn,This is a very controversial subject. We all have to find our own way in this journey of trying to control the effects of autism. I will share with you what I have done, but I'm sure you will have many others contributing their insightful thoughts and suggestions too.My 9 year old son was really over the edge this last summer with his behaviors (throwing, hitting, breaking things, unhappy, etc.) and my husband and I were at our wits end. We have been doing the gfcf diet for awhile, but it wasnt working (for us). We made an appointment to see the developemental ped. to ask about medications since we were seeing that as our only option to get control of my son. After she told us about all of the side effects we just looked at eachother wondering if there were any other options. Then I remembered another mom on here had posted something about the No Harm Foundation. So we studied all of the information and even had a phone consult with the Dr. Young. We decided that we had to at least try it and if it didnt work we would put him on meds. So August 1st of 2011 we started on the Spectrum Balance Protocol diet (SBP). I'm not going to lie....it was very difficult to change our lives to accommodate this diet. However, we have seen soooooo much improvement in my son. He's lovable, not angry. We can transition him from one task to another w/o a wrestling match. His vocabulary has shot thru the roof. He's saying things we have never heard him say before. His teachers are amazed at his transformation. We have recently started to introduce foods that were prohibited in the beginning, like rice and rice pasta. There are some foods that we have tried to wean back in, but right away we see the old autism personality come back. So we know that certain foods are just not going to work for him.Anyways, that is our story. It's worth checking out. It doesnt cost you anything. The only one who truly benefits is the family. Even my husband lost 15 pounds....lol! Here is the link if you would like to read about it. http://www.noharmfoundation.org/Best regards and I hope you find something that will help you and your child:-) Villanuevaerika@...Tel. www.viajestogo.com To: ds-asd < > Sent: Sunday, January 29, 2012 1:37 PM Subject: diet Hi there, I'm new to this group.
