Sweeney said Thursday he’ll introduce a bill that would prevent hospitals from discriminating against developmentally disabled people who need organ transplants. His action came after a South Jersey family allegedly was told their 3-year-old daughter would not be eligible for a kidney transplant at a Philadelphia hospital because of her disability. New Definition of Autism May Exclude Many New Study Suggests Proposed changes in the definition of autism would sharply reduce the skyrocketing rate at which the disorder is diagnosed and might make it harder for many people who would no longer meet the criteria to get health, educational and social services, a new analysis suggests. The Justice Department is Resolving Violations of the ADA in Virginia The Justice Department today announced that it has entered into a comprehensive settlement agreement that will transform the Commonwealth of Virginia’s system for serving people with developmental disabilities, including intellectual disabilities, and will resolve violations of the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA). Under the ADA and the Supreme Court’s landmark decision in Olmstead v. L.C., individuals with disabilities have the right to receive services in the most integrated settings appropriate to their needs. The ADA and Olmstead require states to provide people with disabilities the opportunity to live and receive services in the community instead of in institutions.
