Guest guest
Naomi,I've never heard of Maverick Mind. Any chance you would have time to share about it? For instance, what did you find inspiring about it? Did it have anything to do with our kids? Or was it something inspiring for us, the parents? What was the subject of the book, generally?Janice
Guest guest
Dear Janice The book Mavrick Mind is a book about a women who happens to be a brain scientist, a medical speech language pathologist, who gave birth to a son who was born seemingly deaf, mute, unreachable, unteachable and was told he was severely mentally handicapped and would never learn. She being a medical speech language found is very challenging that with all her professional experience of teaching speech and language she was not able to get through to her own son. The book is about her determination to find a way to get through to him, and her through her skills and experience discovering that it was his visual side of the brain that was dominating his brain so that all the other parts, ie hearing were not able to work, she created programes and an education system to build up the parts of the brain that were not being used but the parts were all there. I found it a very inspiring story of her desire to just never give up and find and try different techniques till she found what was working, she built programs for him and as you will see from the video he is now in collage and studying to be a scientist himself. Its a book I could not put down and afterwards when checking her web sight I saw that you can sign up with her for a consultation where she will build a program for your child. Its sounds very exciting but very expensive too and before investing so much wanted to know if there was anyone who has gone through her system. I highly recommend her book, I think it will give anyone who has a special needs child, hope, strength and encouragement to just never give up, maybe your child is a maverick. Oh she also shows how although her child was diagnosed as autistic, she was able to get rid of the symptoms once he was able to speak, its a long journey of many years but the pay off as you see is amazing check out her web page, it is really very interesting and you can see a 3 min clip of her being interviewed on one of the new channels. http://www.cheriflorance.com Its easier for me to clip and paste a short piece of hers to explain what she does. so here is a clip but feel free to check out her web page for more info/ AUTISM and the MAVERICK MIND— From Symptoms to Symptom-Free “Did Whitney have a disease that would need a cure? Or did he have symptom clusters that would respond to symptom training, so that he could become symptom-free?” that was the question Dr. Cheri Florance asked herself when, after 15 years of work research in the brain science of language and communication disorders, her third child diagnosed with severe autism, mental retardation, and sensory integration problems. Using her skills as a professional, and her dedication as a parent, she was able to find the answer her question. Whitney did, indeed, have symptoms, and these symptoms led Dr. Florance discover that the visual side of Whitney’s brain was over-riding the language-processing of his brain—imitating autism. His strong visual brain was preventing the development o language and communications skills. It was a breakthrough moment in her scientific car She identified this syndrome as the Maverick Mind. Dr. Florance began developing learning exercises that worked to build a better brian between the visual and verbal regions of Whitney’s brain. His older brother and sister joined in training their younger brother. And Whitney began to respond, gradually learning to speak and write and communicate. Before long, he entered a mainstream educational system Today, he is a college graduate, working as an engineer. And he is symptom-free. Throughout her long career as a brain scientist specializing in communication disorders, Florance has devoted her research and work to successfully treating thousands of Maverks who have symptoms of autism and other language processing problems, such as: Pre-school children with language disorders School age speech-language impaired children Stutterers Brain damaged hospital patients Children and adults diagnosed with ADD, PDD, and Asperger’s Syndrome Entrepreneurs who exhibit the “Maverick” syndrome Let me know if you end up reading the book and what you think Regards Naomi T
Guest guest
I read this book. At the time I borrowed some of her ideas - such as getting my son to learn through videos and I think that a year after her book came out videos or DVD's started coming out to teach kids with special needs social skills. I don't remember the name of these videos but they were either really big a few years ago and have faded or we just don't need that anymore. She had the money and the connections to provide her son with one on one grad students continually. Not many of us could maintain that level of intensive therapy either financially or by family schedule. I worked at it and was able to create a less intensive schedule that worked for us. I think many of us would recognize the level of intelligence her child had even though he could not speak. He did initiate things that my son could not - so it seemed fair to modify my schedule for my son so he could learn at his level. She does have great ideas and I also found her book to be very inspirational. It helped me find my road map even if her road map did not work for us.Some of you may also be interested in checking out Berkshire Music Academy. It is a post high school program for students who learn through music but have an intellectual disability. I bring it up because it is the same kind of thinking - wondering how the brain works - but is different as it seems a better fit for our kids. They may have all kinds of undeveloped talents and skills but our kids do have an intellectual disability.Like you, I found the book energizing.LoriMom to Isaac 15 and Tony 13 Dear Janice The book Mavrick Mind is a book about a women who happens to be a brain scientist, a medical speech language pathologist, who gave birth to a son who was born seemingly deaf, mute, unreachable, unteachable and was told he was severely mentally handicapped and would never learn. Many of us are not at this level financially or whatever the case. I hate to have to pick and choose what I can do for ... sometimes I want to try it ALL and for obvious reasons I can't. Then I remember how blessed we really are here in America for what we are able to do for our children - even if it's just a little - it's much more than most can in other countries! Sometimes too, I just feel like even though these stories are meant to be inspirational, they end up being more depressing to me because so many of these stories involve individuals who are nowhere as challenged cognitively and intellectually as my child, and so it's like comparing apples to oranges and not all that helpful in that sense. Just my 2 cents... Heidi
Guest guest
Lori & Group.Berkshire Hills Music Academy is about 45 minutes from me. I toured this school, observed for a day and attended a performance. The staff is wonderful and the school is an old restored mansion. It is very nice and a good transition option for any student with musical interest. It is very expensive. Many of the parents had this paid for by the school district. You need to get very creative for the funding but it is doable.
