Because drops things VERY easily and doesn't have good sense about taking care of things, we opted to start out with an iPod Touch (vs. an iPad because it's easier to handle and carry around). It can do much of the same things an iPad can - as far as I can tell - just on a smaller scale. We have her iPod in an Otterbox Defender case ($27 from Amazon) and so far so good!

We have the Trident Kraken IPad 2 case and we like it a lot.

We put her Ipad (which is in the Trident case) into a messenger type bag that she caries around when we are out.

So far so good, she hasn't thrown it yet.
