Hi Liz,I remember having this issue when Zeb was in 1st grade. It took me awhile to understand what was going on. Firstly, He was not cued in advance and the subject that frustrated him the most followed recess. I bought Zeb a times to hold, the teacher set it before going out to recess. After the timer went off, he was expected to tell his peers and was the line leader. It was a good incentive for him. I also looked at the math modification that needed tweaking. I know I don't post too often, but need to vent...Had to leave work early yesterday to pick Tori up from school because she REFUSED to get on the bus..after refusing to go back into the school

after recess.

Sitting here racking my brain trying to figure out WTH is going on with the 12 y.o. She is sitting on the couch, happy as could be. The problem is, she is supposed to be in school! Starting to feel like last

summer all over again. =( Had to cancel another Doctor's appt for me this morning..and call off work AGAIN.

And now the fun begins! "I'm ready to go to school, Mom!" I told her she wasn't going cause she

missed the bus..and now she is upset. UGH!! Why does life have to be so difficult at times. How

do you convey to someone like Tori that things don't work the way THEY want it to...WHEN they are ready? There are times, places, schedules that NEED to be followed. I hate my life when this stuff starts up! Oh and I just got raked on the back of the neck cause I told her NO SCHOOL, NO MUSIC. Gonna be a very long day.

Hi Liz, hugs to you. I go thru this too sometimes. gets moody and just

wants to lay in bed and then go when she is ready sometimes. If I stayed home

this would be great but I also have lost numerous pay days. It stinks. I

recently tried and I mean recent like this morning to give her a treat. I went

to the dollar store and got a weeks worth of stuff..chalk, bubbles, her favorite

beads (she has a million) and some bags of cheese doodles. I told her this

morning that if she got up and dressed ill let her pick out a present. Afer a

few moans and groans she got excited when she saw beads and finally got dressed.

Ill do this everyday if I have to lol. Last week she was all hormonal she got

her monthly and when I asked her to get dressed she started to cry when I said

pink or black pants and then punched me in the chest as she was leaving when the

bus came..my poor left boob lol. My husband used to get her up by saying she was

gonna have a party at school but i think she caught on lol. Good luck maybe some

dollar store treats will help.

Thanks, Betsy!  We have tried everything with her, and sometimes they work and other times, forget it!  When she gets in this mode, we are the losers.  The have DS & ASD, but they are too smart for their own good way too many times!  =)

A dollar and a dream!! Man if i could stay home the things I could accomplish. I

could drive her to school, bring her to the park afterward, dr apts etc.

sighhhhhhhhh. I used to be 5 minutes away from my house but then the company

sold the building and we moved to almost a hour away. Now i dont get home till

almost 8pm, her schedule was thrown for a loop. My husband now gives her a

shower and then i chill with her when i get home till she goes to sleep. Im

pretty sure she gets enough sleep but who know whys she is cranky now when she

gets up. You have to remember being a teenager yourself--did you want to get up

for school?? lol

Oh, how so many of us know that!  I had to call off work today..AGAIN.  Had to leave early yesterday...AGAIN.  It never ends.  Finally, after 13 years of a 90 mile commute both ways to work, my husband has finally been able to work from an office just 2.7 miles from home.  He knows how difficult it has been on me alone, and now he sees it ever so clearly being here in the mornings.  It gives them great bonding time WHEN she is cooperative.

Liz - time to remind you about the 24 inch rule.  There is no need for any of us to be marked, attacked, hurt because we need to get a direction given - 24 inches please.  Of course if there is a fire or raging bull - then I GUESS it is worth getting hurt .

Liz,I was thinking about my response to you and entirely missed the boat. Firstly, if Tori is already at school why is the school calling you? Tori must have a BIP and it's up to the school to revise it if it is not effective. The school staff should not be calling you to pick her up during the school day. What would have happened if you didn't pick her up? Charlyne

Hey, Char!  No...they COULD NOT get her on the bus yesterday to come home...she REFUSED to get up and everyone is HANDS-OFF...plus she weighs 90 lbs.  The bus can only wait a certain amt. of time because they have other kids on there from her school that need to be brought home.

Mike & I COULD NOT get her out of the bathroom this morning to get on the bus.  And I refused to take her when she was good & ready.  It seems to be a control thing and she wants to do WHEN she is good & ready.  No reasoning behind her actions..just she doesn't want to do things when she needs to.

How do you use the 24 inch rule? I have been getting scratched regularly on my hands and arms. If is being aggressive I do try to keep my distance, but lately he'll be smiling and then just lunge out and scratch me. This is all kind of new. He was always gentle and now I think ever since puberty about a year or so ago he is definitely a Dr. Jekyl, Mr. Hyde. I rarely see it coming. He isn't a hitter. I don't think he's ever hit and he doesn't bite but the scratching is out of control. I've been putting gloves on to protect my hands when I need to change him if he's hyper. And the growlling is so bad it can drive you crazy. I know a lot of boys get very aggressive at this age. He will be 15 in June. I hope I survive.

I know I don't post too often, but need to vent...

Had to leave work early yesterday to pick Tori up from school because she REFUSED to get on the bus..after refusing to go back into the school

after recess.

Oh, Terry!  The 24 inch rule is never get closer than 24 inches if you can avoid it.  Tori is a HUGE scratcher.  I used to sport totally bruised arms (esp. just below my underarm).  One sensory OT said back then it could have been like a fight or flight thing, that she just got so over stimmed, she'd reach out and attack.

Now I understand. I hated those war of the will days. We used social stories, cued, reviewed and rechecked the daily schedule and timers. DVDs were and remain a prime reinforcer. On a good day he was allowed to watch movies on a bad day he sat with nothing. I did not punish for school issues, only going to school on time. He couldn't get home fast enough so that was never an issue, thank goodness. When we think we have it figure out, they out smart us. Charlyne

Liz, I think that's it with too. He never scratches early in the day when he is calm. It is mostly at night and terrible when he's tired. He also does it when I tell him no. My arms are mostly scratched from the elbow down. Now with warmer weather and short sleeves it will be worse. It's funny though he won't dare scratch my 20 year old daughter. He scratches me, Dad and my 26 year old son but never Jenna.. We're all a bit afraid of her I guess, lol But seriously for some strange reason he listens to her. He will shut the lights on me all night but all she has to do is point and say knock it off and he stops. And the funny part is that she is tiny and he could knock her right over if he wanted to. Too bad she's not home more. He also never scratches my oldest daughter who doesn't live home but visits often.

Could something be going on ON THE BUS?!?!?!Desi To: Sent: Tuesday, March 20, 2012 7:45 AM Subject: Re: UGH!

Liz

Liz,I was thinking about my response to you and entirely missed the boat. Firstly, if Tori is already at school why is the school calling you? Tori must have a BIP and it's up to the school to revise it if it is not effective. The school staff should not be calling you to pick her up during the school day. What would have happened if you didn't pick her up?

Hi Liz,I remember having this issue when Zeb was in 1st grade. It took me awhile to understand what was going on. Firstly, He was not cued in advance and the subject that frustrated him the most followed recess. I bought Zeb a times to hold, the teacher set it before going out to recess. After the timer went off, he was expected to tell his peers and was the line leader. It was a good incentive for him. I also looked at the math modification that needed tweaking.

i know exactly what you mean, with nathan its "sick cough cough, sick, throat, sleep" I also have found great rewards (bribes, lol) on these days, like breakfast pizza, lol nathan is dressed adn ready for school in a hearbeat, lol. Tuesdays and Fridays have become easier as those are swimmng days, just brely mention it and its almost as fast as pizza for breakfast. The hardest part I have been finding is when he is really sick, he is fine with staying home "oh well, no school, go tomarrow" its when he is better again I have to start over, uuugh. many hugs! shawna

Hi Liz, hugs to you. I go thru this too sometimes. gets moody and just wants to lay in bed and then go when she is ready sometimes. If I stayed home this would be great but I also have lost numerous pay days. It stinks. I recently tried and I mean recent like this morning to give her a treat. I went to the dollar store and got a weeks worth of stuff..chalk, bubbles, her favorite beads (she has a million) and some bags of cheese doodles. I told her this morning that if she got up and dressed ill let her pick out a present. Afer a few moans and groans she got excited when she saw beads and finally got dressed. Ill do this everyday if I have to lol. Last week she was all hormonal she got her monthly and when I asked her to get dressed she started to cry when I said pink or black pants and then punched me in the chest as she was leaving when the bus came..my poor left boob lol. My husband used to get her up by saying she was gonna have a party at

school but i think she caught on lol. Good luck maybe some dollar store treats will help. Charlyne

I know I don't post too often, but need to vent...Had to leave work early yesterday to pick Tori up from school because she REFUSED to get on the bus..after refusing to go back into the school after recess.Sitting here racking my brain trying to figure out WTH is going on with the 12 y.o. She is sitting on the couch, happy as could be. The problem is, she is supposed to be in school! Starting to feel like last summer all over again. =( Had to cancel another Doctor's appt for me this morning..and call off work AGAIN.

And now the fun begins! "I'm ready to go to school, Mom!" I told her she wasn't going cause she missed the bus..and now she is upset. UGH!! Why does life have to be so difficult at times. How do you convey to someone like Tori that things don't work the way THEY want it to...WHEN they are ready? There are times, places, schedules that NEED to be followed. I hate my life when this stuff starts up! Oh and I just got raked on the back of the neck cause I told her NO SCHOOL, NO MUSIC. Gonna be a very long day.--
