Guest guest
I don't know the answer about the blankets although since it was brought up I am thinking of getting that...we took Wesley to a speech therapist/oral motor and feeding specialist who has great success with children with Down Syndrome. IN addition to the exercises she gave us to do with Wesley' s mouth , she could tell by the things he did and the way he moved that he needed a strong "sensory diet"...that he had a lot of deficit sensory-wise and that he would need a lot of input.....one of the things she recommended was a spio suit which hugs the body and gives a sense of "where the body is in space"...I am sure you have heard that phrase used a lot in light of our kids with sensory needs....it is very expensive....$129 for the pants and the same price for the pants...I ordered it because I have never tried that with Wesley and it makes sense...she said not to use it for sleep or for the pool....but in everyday wear....there were also gloves n the spio website ....fingerless gloves....and since wesley has his hands in his mouth a lot and also puts his hands out to be squeezed , I thought these hugging gloves would provide some good input to him...they are $60 for the pair..so I am thinking the weighted blanket is for the same reason...to give a snug sense of feeling to the child or person, to give them input needed to help them to sleep?? I think it would be beneficial to wesley...he kicks his covers off a lot...so weighted or not I think that issue will still exist...but maybe it will help him sleep more soundly...just sharing and wondering where to get such a blanket ...if you think a particular one is better form a particular place...Annie mom to Wesley age 12To: From: vtnvtnvtn@...Date: Sat, 17 Mar 2012 10:16:44 -0400Subject: Re: Weighted blankets Thank you, Liz! Guest guest
has loved his weighted blankets, but when we got our first ones when he was little they had sand tubes you put in there to change the wieght, and nathan use to wetthe bed nightly and it was a big deal uugh those blankets. as a quilter I became creative and used marbles sewn into the pockets, they are water resistant and i could change the weight as needed etc. Now they do make some kind of bead i remember in a quilting magazine to make wieghted blankets with, that are washable, and mold/mildew resitant etc. I cant remeber the name, but maybe if google it or something??? Guest guest
It does seem like a lot of work especially if you don't have a sewing machine. The only advantage of making the blanket that I can think of (which really may not be an advantage at all for some) is the freedom to choose the fabric and design. Zoe (at 11) still loves Dora so if I do it myself I'll make her a Dora weighted blanket (if I find the fabric). Guest guest
Just an FYI-The blanket I got for Tori is machine washable too!Liz Well the website I looked on that Liz suggested has a Dora one...I thought of that for wesley since he still likes Dora....it was the www. magicblanket.com....I know I will end up buying it...I am too impatient to wait for someone to make it... The only advantage of making the blanket that I can think of (which really may not be an advantage at all for some) is the freedom to choose the fabric and design. Zoe (at 11) still loves Dora so if I do it myself I'll make her a Dora weighted blanket (if I find the fabric). Guest guest
Went to www.magicblanket.com as was suggested but all it lists is a bunch of other company web sites when you click on weighted blankets. Just curious as to which company(s) people here on the list have purchased from? Thanks! Heidi
