http://www.khouse.org/enews/2012-03-13/ Please scroll down to the article entitled "After-Birth Abortion Article Births Outrage". Two prominent so-called ethicists sparked a wave of outrage after arguing in a prominent journal that killing babies after birth should be permissible, claiming newborns should not be considered “persons†and citing the widespread legalized slaughter of pre-born children as justification. The authors cited babies with Down syndrome as possible candidates for execution: "Such children might be an unbearable burden on the family and on society as a whole, when the state economically provides for their care.†But even the potential to

put the “well-being†of a family at risk should be an acceptable reason to choose death, the authors argued, saying adoption could make parents “suffer psychological distress.†Of course this sounds outrageous. But so did performing abortions for a while. No one is going to jump on the band wagon and advocate we do this at the present time. But the fact that someone is willing to write about this, only desensitizes us to the actual horrors of the procedure. We are entertaining notions of killing our newborn children that are no different than

ignorant tribesmen who smother a deformed baby at birth or ancient civilizations who sacrificed their children to bronze images of a deity. How does this make us "more enlightened" than our ancestors? Are the motives really that different? We have gotten trapped repeatedly in medicine arguing the humanity of certain procedures by alleviating suffering. It is a normal, empathic response to want to eliminate suffering. But should we make it a goal to eliminate all suffering? If so, should we not all be killed at birth? After all, life itself is painful and fraught with disaster and heartache. Is some degree of suffering NECESSARY to promote mental stability and happiness? Are we causing suffering to those with disabled children by telling them that they should not be subject to

psychological distress? Are we causing further harm, by not embracing disabled individuals and encouraging society to help those parents? As a parent of a child with disabilities, my life would be "less stressful" if we taught society to embrace, rather than pity, my child's disability. This is the slippery slope we stand on. What is the purpose of suffering? Is all suffering "bad"? Should medicine seek to eliminate all suffering? links to articles: http://www.stuff.co.nz/world/6510781/Outrage-over-newborn-abortion-claim http://www.news.com.au/national/abortion-outrage-mums-should-be-allowed-to-terminate-newborns-say-australian-academics/story-e6frfkvr-1226286841396 http://www.thenewamerican.com/culture/faith-and-morals/11032-outrage-grows-after-ethicists-push-legalized-baby-murder Shane Averyfather of , age 12, Down Syndrome-Autism
