What worked for Aden was 2 things. First we used a toner bottle full of warm water. We would put Aden on the toilet and spray the water gently on him. It gave him the sensation that he needed to go. Then when he went we would have a huge celebration with lots of hugs and high fives and stickers. Second we got rid of diapers for all but night and long bus or car rides (Adens original bus rides to school were almost 2hours long). IMO the diapers actually slow down the process because it makes it harder for kids to tell if they are wet or dry. I suspect that they always feel somewhat wet. Hello,

I just wanted to thank all of you for your warm welcome. I have joined many online groups (DS, FASD, Myopathy) in the past but always felt like an outsider as a new member. Your kindness and words of encouragement mean so much to me.

I have enjoyed getting to know a little bit about you and your children and I hope I will be a part of this group for years to come. It is my desire to, eventually, be a help to all of you and your families. Right now this dual diagnosis area is new terrritory for me so I might be asking more questions than helping to answer some - I hope you understand.

As far as Blake's health, he is doing well. He was born with cataracts in both eyes and had some hearing loss. He just had his (hopefully) last eye surgery last June and his hearing has been within the normal range since he had surgery and tubes at age 1. We almost lost him when he was 6 weeks old secondary to having RSV - I think breastfeeding him helped. He also was hospitalized in 2010 and 2011 with pneumonia but has been doing fine since.

One question, do any of you have any tips for getting Blake potty-trained? We have tried just about everything. He doesn't seem to mind having a wet or soiled pull-up. He even wets through his pants and rarely says anything.

Thank you!

we put a toileting schedule (including base line data as to when) in Elie's IEp.  We had REGULAR meetings to discuss - feces!!  I forced the issue of NO DIAPERS>  School was not happy, but I believe it both made them more aware to toilet regularly and helped Elie become aware of comfort and discomfort.  It was NOT easy and took years - but each year got better.

Thank you Sara and for your ideas to help potty train Blake.

I have to admit that we used to have him on a strict potty schedule but it didn't seem to make a difference.  He is older now so I'm glad you brought it up because maybe we need to try again - it's so easy to just give up sometimes when things don't work.

I will try the underwear again (we started having him wear the underwear but he was wetting and soiling frequently in the house and school didn't want to have him in underwear despite sending several pairs plus extra clothes) and I like the idea of white briefs so that they can be bleached.

I'll let you know how things turn out.

Thanks again!
