Hi Jabi,

Most of the teachers will have this attitude Jabi. Don't worry, most

important is what you think. You are the expert on your son. Trust

your gut feeling. I do understand where you are coming from as I used

to feel that way too. It was so frustrating until I decided to

homeschool Imaan. It was one of the best decision and I can clearly

see that those negative judgements are not true nor useful.

Is this a mainstream school? Perhaps she think he is severe because she doesn't know what severe is? My experience has always been the opposite of yours, both my boys have had everything talked up to the point the only recognizable thing left at meetings is their names! Either way it isn't helpful, maybe she is preparing the ground for her own failures whereas our lot here just make it all up regardless.

Dear Jabi, You have done a great job! My son's score is around your son's and he is doing really good. Some people who are working with our children just don't understand that every little victory is a huge success for them and us and should be celebrated accordingly. lets smile and enjoy our little ones. God bless their little hearts :) Happy Easter,N To: Autism-Biomedical-Europe Sent: Friday, 6 April 2012, 15:48 Subject: Severe or Moderate autism

Dear All,

ATEC score for my son is around 52-58 range. We have worked a lot to reach here, from 115.

His school teacher reminds me all the time, he is very severe. She never says anything good about my son. T.A says, he has done very well today, he did this and all, then the teacher would say only for a short time.

This teacher used be his pre-school teacher(private pre-school) where we paid lots of money and didn't see any improvement. So we decided to stop the pre-school.

My son has improved a lot, but this teacher is always negative. Whenever she sees me she says, I need some social worker like respite care, to help with him.

My son is not aggressive, he used to be hyper but now not that much. he eats well, use toilet, sleep well. He likes people and all,

We have worked hard to make him sit on table and do the work. Now teacher complaining that he is o.k. with sitting task, but doesn't do any imaginative play, she is complaining. I am getting very upset, as we worked hard and thought he is on moderate.

Regards

Jabi

Happy Easter,Totally agree with you there, if people were happy for me just turning up with brushed hair, teeth and clean clothes that would really help me to see how i appear to others. There is no reward for turning up doing all those things and any embarrassment by turning up not doing those things (i.e. there pointed out in front of others) only hinders the situation and causes resentment. It is very exhausting to do those things daily as it happens and folk dont realise the effort involved.

We are encouraged by service providers - I am thinking of social services - to

put up with an extreme situation as if it is normal. So we struggle on to the

point where collapse may happen. If we complain/can't cope, then it is our

fault, not that the situation is impossible.

I had a meeting with social services earlier this week to update my carerr's

assessment. This time I had an advocate supporting me who doesn't have a

background in disability. She therefore had a fresh perspective - and her view

was that the situation with H was incredibly demanding and that I was doing an

enormous amount. The social worker was trying to make it sound like the current

situation was pretty good...

I recent spoke with a retired clinical psychologist from an academic background

who is now doing sessional work with families with disabled children. They said

that they were hearing repeatedly from families that, when they asked for help,

professionals would say that they were not so badly off as others and that they

shouldn't ask for more help.

I think a lot of us may be familiar with this situation.

Jabi, sorry just read your message. I would like to take your hand and squeeze it to let you know I understand. My son does not go to school but I remember when he went his teacher always made negative comments. You must take heart at the improvements your child has achieved he seems to be doing well and that is fantastic. If there is an issue with imaginary play ask the teacher what she is doing about it and how you can help. Apply behaviour analysis on her give the support person big smiles when she says something positive about your son and ignore any negative comments, it should work no one wants to be ignored. Above all know where your son has come from and the effort you are putting in no one can take that away from you damn it!CiaoSent from my iPad
