Re: Biomedical treatment, when does it start working?

Hi ,Welcome to the list. Unfortunately biomed does not work in an ABC sort of manner – what works for one child might never work for another. There are no easy and universal biomed 'solutions' and steps to take that can be expected to bring definite solutions. Those things that you mentioned do bring improvements in many kids, but not all, so don’t get discouraged if you don't see any effectts straight away. On the other hand cutting sugar, preservatives and artificial stuff is always a good thing, so you child's health is def benefitting even if you don't see changes on the outside. Best of luck with it all (and never give up!!). Hi allI'm new to this group and have just started biomedical treatment with my son who has just turned 5 and has had about 3 months of ABA (we have recently started that as well). We have managed wonders with behaviour change via ABA and I'm wondering when it is that you see significant effects from starting biomedical. We read about kids who suddenly start coming out with hundreds of words or dramatically improving their social skills. Although I know a lot of it is biased the only improvements I've seen so far are his skin has got better and he is less hyper active, more focused. He is also saying more and manding more but this is also due to advice on how to get him to speak from ABA consultant. He is on his 3rd week into the biomedical treatment, GFCF diet, in addition soya free, sugar free, preservatives, E nos, artificial flavourings free. I'm baking and cooking from scratch a lot, trial and error with recipes. He went very weak and subdued the first few days and looked extremely tired, sleeping a lot through the day, then perked up and seems to be coping really well... The nutricionist mentioned die off and said it's normal. He hasn't started supplements, or taken any antibiotics or anti fungal medication or done any cheelation related treatment yet. His consultant wants to see him mid june to do all the testing after he has had a few weeks on the diet. He said he would be a different child in June when we see him... He was primarily observed as having low immune system, massive tonsils, slow digestive system and abnormal skin texture and tone. Any experiences would be useful. Does anyone have experience with clay baths?

What products do you use, and from where?

Can it be done together with chelation?

Won't effect chelation, I never tried it as too worried about my drains

clogging, my house is extended in every direction and blockages would mean

digging up floors

My son gets VERY wet the week after DMSA/ALA, but is now refusing nappies

saying they make him feel like a baby. Even with a pullup the mattress is

getting soaked and the smell in the room unbearable. I keep buying plastic

mattress protectors and they keep tearing, he is 10 and does jump around his

bed so understandable. Any good ideas?? What do you do for your children?

When my son used to wet the bed, I had the same problem with mattress

protectors tearing, so in the end I bought a waterproof mattress, It was

secondhand, which I thought might mean it was a bit less toxic, and only

cost £10 from eBay.

Agree with Natasa - there are no clear-cut solutions, unfortunately. However, a healthy diet provides a very solid foundation for biomed, and the GAPS diet is very nutritious and suits many of our children, so you've made a good start there. If you're seeing improvements after only three weeks, that's very encouraging. The problem is that even though all our kids have 'autism', they present differently and the underlying etiology may well be different too. So it stands to reason that different children need different solutions. One thing I've learnt, the hard way, is the importance of striking a balance between not flitting from one intervention to the next without allowing enough time for it to work, and spending too long on any single intervention, judging when to move on if it's not working. (I'm not talking about diet here though - a good diet should underpin all biomed.) And just as importantly, try to find time to read and research, learn from the huge experience of groups like these. There's really good info on the Treating Autism website

http://www.treatingautism.co.uk/ and the conference in September will be a great opportunity to learn both from the speakers and from other parents.Wishing you all the very best on your journey.Joanne> >> > My son gets VERY wet the week after DMSA/ALA, but is now refusing> nappies> > saying they make him feel like a baby. I agree with both Natasa and Joanne, who have given you some important points.

I think we all sometimes underestimate the importance of 'small' improvements

such as what you've mentioned, like your son's skin improving. Skin is a huge

indicator of overall health, it is an active and hugely important organ that can

reflect quite accurately sometimes what is happening on the 'skin' inside of us.

So, IMO, when you see improvements in his skin, that is actually quite huge. It

could mean that you've diminished ongoing internal damage and prevented years of

future damage. It could mean his nutritional levels will improve, again this

would not only improve him in the moment, but prevent years of future damage

that poor nutritional levels can cause.

The huge wows some few people see are rare, but widely publicized. For most

people, when you're treating chronic conditions, the improvements tend to be

over time. But any improvement you can get and keep, no matter how small at the

time, is really huge, because you need to think of all the problems you have

avoided by addressing the issue effectively now.

Good luck with everything :-)

yes, and just to add to what Anita's saying, there are all the

improvements you don't even notice at the time but then later you

realise this symptom or that symptom has gone and you can't remember

what did it because you weren't watching for that at the time. For us,

diminishing sound sensitivities and pain threshold going from high to

normal all happened somewhere along the biomedical road but I'm not sure

where.

Thanks for your replies on this. We're with Dr. G too and I'm now concerned

about antibiotics and all the medication, reading what you are all saying but

will see what he recommends. As you've mentioned things we don't even notice,

today my son fell off and came to me looking for a cuddle. That hadn't happened

before. He wasn't even that hurt and looked into my eyes for comfort. Really

nice to experience this. Then again, he's coming up with new things frequently

now due to also having ABA. Life is getting better for him and for us.

Thanks Natasa, he's with Dr. G who has been highly recommended to us. I'm hoping

that all the supplements will give him a boost and help further. Not looking

forward to paying for them though :(.
