Guest guest
I have been reading this thread with great interest and have a question for those who do have a wheelchair. Who did you go to to get the script for the wheelchair? Did your rheumatologist write it or did you have to go to a therapist? I had an extremely humbling excursion to Washington, D.C. today and finally realized that I can't continue life without some help. I am able to go to the store for groceries but that is about as much as I can do. Shandi
Guest guest
I also agree. But the problem with them are the vehicle that transports them. But you might not need to carry them shopping as most stores have them. I was sent home from the hospital after foot surgery, and got a BIG surprise. The doctor told me before that I would be able to walk and to use a walker. But discharge orders said absolutely no weight on that foot. So here I was in the car and no way to get out when I arrived home. Our breakfast chairs have casters so my husband brought one of them out to get me in the house. Then he went to a mission, like Salvation Army store and bought a regular wheel chair for $15.00. When I went to the doctor a few days later I took the chair and he belittled me using a chair, like I was exagerating and had no reason to use a chair. Here I was almost 70 and had little upper body strength and certainly not enough to use a walker. I have asked several people what I want to ask this group now. Can you use a walker and put NO weight at all on one foot? That would make you be hopping. When he had told me to use a walker he had said that he tought I couldn't (wouldn't be able to) use crutches. Having never use a walker I know I could do that better than hopping with a walker. Any Comments? Even though I think this totally absurd but will add that that doctor is the only one that has ever done anything to help. I won't be too hard on him. Guest guest
I don't see how you can use a walker if you have little upper body strength. In theory you could use a walker and not put weight on the leg. When I went to PT after an athroscopy on my knee they didn't want me to put weight on the leg but I sure wasn't able to lift myself up as my wrists are pretty much self fused. I opted for crutches but did not use them right, putting the weight on my armpits but they did not want me in a wheelchair. I was 24 at the time.
