Hi all

Dr G said to start my son on iodine but I didn't write the dose down. Has he

put anyone else's child on this and if so can you please tell me what the normal

dose is?

Thanks

Hi ,

My daughter is on 1 x 50mg Iodoral tablet per day. This is a pretty high dose

for her, but, she is very happy on it and says that it gives her energy.

There do not seem to be set recommendations. I have taken my advice from the

Iodine Yahoo Group. You would probably need to start low with say 1 or 2 drops

of Lugol's and gradualy work up. We started off with 1 x Iodoral 12.5mg and

worked up over a period of 4 weeks, ensuring that my daughter was taking all of

the companion nutrients.

Hi Janet,

On the contrary, as I understand it high dose Iodine supports thyroid function

- on the iodine group there are people who have either had to reduce their

thyroid medication or even not need it at all after a period of using high dose

iodine. This is our experience too. Both myself and my daughter do not need as

much thyroid medication when we take the high dose iodine. My daughter's health

has improved tremendously since we started the high dose iodine nearly 2 years

ago.

I'm not sure about the conflicting evidence - a lot of mainstream medicine is

very against iodine - which is abit odd when it appears that it is needed

everywhere in the body! We paint lugol's solution on our chests at night wih

coconut oil - we sleep better as it seems that out lungs still do not have

enough iodine.

I'm pretty sure I'm in a minority but higher doses of iodine (iodoral) and

topical iodine were unhelpful for me. I have used tri-quench (the vit k protocol

suggested that the type of iodine can be important) which seemed better - but I

remain cautious about iodine.

Best wishes, Sandy

Yes there is a very big risk if you are HYPERthyroid, and even if you're not to

be honest - if you have certain antibodies or another autoimmune disease you are

also at risk. My husband recently had an acute and very severe episode of

hyperthyroidism, never had it before and thyroid tests were all normal a few

months previous, and had to have radioactive iodine (RAI) in an attempt to

destroy his thyroid the day after diagnosis of Grave's Disease. He was

diagnosed with another autoimmune disease last year ('s) which I guess

put him at higher risk. I would never recommend RAI but his life was at risk

and there was no other option. He now has to avoid iodine as it will make him

much worse (could bring on a thyroid storm which has a 50% death rate). Not

something to take lightly.

My son has a high TSH, so HYPOthyroid which is much more common, and iodine can

help reduce this. So good for him, bad for husband. I would not recommend

taking iodine without having recent thyroid blood testing, including antibodies

which I'm sure has done as she says she is already on thyroid medication.

So sorry to hear about your husband . What an awful thing to go

through, also the 's must be difficult - another life threatening

illness.

I will just say though that the Iodine Group would disagree - there are alot of

people on there who have reduced their antibodies with high dose iodine. There

are also alot on there who have had RAI for hyperthyroidism and are taking high

dose iodine.

It is really important if you are going to take high dose iodine that you follow

the iodine protocol, you can't just start at high doses without experiencing

de-tox symptoms. Usually, you need to up your dose slowly and salt load as and

when and ensure that you are taking the companion nutrients.

The other point is that we need elemental iodine as well as potassium iodide

which is why SSKI is not recommended.

I haven't actualy tested my own antibodies - my daughter's have been though and

she was OK. I had a very low Free T4.

Hope that your husband remains OK from now on.

Thanks I will have a look and also join the Iodine Group. It's really

frustrating, I bought us both iodine loading tests before Christmas but then we

both got this death flu bug and didn't do them. My husband never really got

better and they wonder if the virus may have brought on the Graves. I do think

iodine deficiency is a factor for my whole family. He's also extremely

allergic/asthmatic, which can also be a trigger (and the reason he couldn't have

beta blockers to reduce his heart rate, hence the RAI).

Thanks again

Hi , how frustrating. The virus probably made a big difference,

especially with the 's. I'm not surprised that he is extremely

allergic/asthmatic. Apart from iodine deficieny, the lack of cortisol will cause

this as well. Hope that he is on a good replacement dose of cortisol - this is

another area that mainstream medicine are cautious in. Does he take DHEA &

Florinef as well? We think that my daughter has secondary adrenal insufficency,

hence I've spent alot of time researching this as well!

All the best,
