i give my son omega 3 chewy fruit bursts from natures best, dha 100mg and epa 14mg

Subject: Fish Oils - DHA and EPATo: Autism-Biomedical-Europe Date: Friday, 15 June, 2012, 15:03

I was ordering some more fish oils for myself from Healthspan, they're quite cheap, and I was told by the advisor that EPA was good for the heart and DHA was good for the brain. I have been giving Charlie eye q fro years but it's DHA is a third of the EPA so I was wondering what fish oils other people give. Obviously if what she says is right then the higher the DHA the better.Peta

***im on the eye q brand as well. Im treating my asd/dyslexia/depression etc and i prefer the liquid form but unsure how much to take so i can get the most benefit? Ive heard b vitamins esp b12 and b6 can help autistic behaviour.

Peta I think the advice re action of EPA may not be quite accurate. I thought

EPA was used for signalling in the brain and DHA was used for the constuction of

the brain. Hence at different times of one's life the balance and ratio between

EPA/DHA may need to be different. So lots of DHA before birth and in very early

postnatal life, for example, but greater need for EPA rather than DHA later on?

Perhaps someone who knows more than me can add to this?

My understanding of this: if you are supplementing a child you would want to

emphasize DHA. IMO, because we are trying to bring brains back, even if teh

child is older, DHA heavy would be good.

If this is for an adult, more EPA. Our body can convert EPA to DHA, but not

the reverse. I also wouldn't trust my child's body to be doing this as the

process can likely be inhibited in a number of ways.

For people trying to use fatty acids of conditions like bipolar, I have read

very high doses of EPA.

This is a complicated subject. There are essentially two major points to bear in mind. The first is that the proportions of EPA to DHA required vary with the age of the child so there is not a one size fits all for this - this is because at some stages we need to produce higher levels of structural lipids for cell membranes (when there is the most active cell division and brain growth) while at others this is less important. The second point is that the omega-3 oils (ALA, DHA and EPA) are metabolised to give anti-inflammatory thromboxanes, leucotrienes and prostaglandins while the omega-6 oils (LA, AA and DPA) produce pro-inflammatory thromboxanes, leucotrienes and prostaglandins. Both groups are important, the important thing is the ratio. This subject is well covered in Udo Erasmus's classic book Fats that Heal, Fats that Kill. This is why the changed dietary balance of O-3 to O-6 resulting from differences in farming methods (grain feeding cattle and high-grain diets for salmon and forced tuna) which increase O-6 and reduces O-3 are implicated in differences in brain development (see recent work from the MoBA project). In addition to the links to ASD, these are also implicated in increased general rates of problems linked to inflammatory reactions such as arthritis, obesity, immune dysfunction and heart disease.I covered some of this

work in my dietary interventions book, but a lot has happened since that came out in 2009.Hope this helps,Ken To: autism-biomedical-europe Sent: Monday, 18 June 2012, 23:24 Subject: RE:

I wanted to quote the suggestions and ideas from several posts (including yours

Margaret) just for the object of sharing the ideas and getting Jeans and maybe

others thoughts. I just want to borrow the info to help me think about this, (my

son has been on a high EPA supp a long time now) and intended collating the

paragraphs that stood out for me without reference to the authors (unless they'd

prefer to be credited). I wouldn't normally ask permission if it were a random

sentence but since it was several paras from several different posts, thought i

should get permission first. I can email just privately to if you prefer I

didn't post on another forum.

Sorry to confuse the issue even further, but I've always given more EPA than DHA

as it's supposed to help with ADHD, dyslexia and dyspraxia which are big

problems for my son.

This is the link I got my info from, but I do agree with Anita about possible

conversion problems, so really not sure what to do now!

It is confusing, but what I do is give my son quite a lot of both. This is in

part because I need huge doses myself and so assume he may have the same high

need as me (both my other kids do). So, since he tolerates this much I feel

there is a bit of wiggle room in the ratios.

Hi amy,

Always work up slowly to whatever level you think is best for your child. For

us, ds gets about 3-3.5 tsps of

http://www.nordicnaturals.com/en/Products/Product_Details/514/?ProdID=1418

every day. He's about 65 pounds now, but he was taking the same amount when he

was 40 pounds.

But, to put it into perspective, I need about 5 or 6 tsps a day of this

http://www.iherb.com/Carlson-Labs-The-Very-Finest-Fish-Oil-Lemon-Flavor-16-9-fl-\

oz-500-ml/2796 to get rid of the chicken skin on teh back of my arms. That is

a lot of omega 3s, plus I get them in my diet with salmon and flax seed, etc.

I wish I had known how much I needed before I had kids. I was told by doctors

that the chicken skin, technically called keratosis pilaris was 'genetic'. My

sister and my mom have it too. As did all my kids. Notice how useless

offcial gov't info is on this issue
