Hi My son Luke is really struggling to sleep at the moment and melatonin seems to make his intrusive thoughts (OCD) worse the next day – plus it doesn’t work particularly well. Last night we tried time release (kirkmans) melatonin and he settled a little sooner but still woke at 5. On average he is getting about 6 hours sleep a night which for a 10 year old is not enough. He looks really tired and it is obviously effecting his mood, his appetite and his levels of energy. Plus I am also sleep deprived! Luke tells me he finds it difficult to relax (when I ask him). He is currently on acyclovir which I think has affected his sleep. I have just spoken to Dr Goyal and he has suggested either 5htp OR phenergan (anti-histamine). What I would really like to know is what are people’s experiences of the above 2. I want to try one of them tonight but wondering which may be the best one to try first. Would really appreciate some feedback from people. ThanksNicola _,_._,___

Harry has never been a great sleeper, melatonin worked for a while, then when that didn't work anymore I tried adrenal cortex which did work initially but we still have random nights when he wakes,

iv now started qigong massage hoping that it will help

5hpt is very good here, and so have been all anithistamines we tried. With 5htp def improved sleep noticable straight away – not in terms of hours (always slept the same long hours) but quality of sleep, as used to get up tired and foggy-brained regardless of how long has slept before 5htp. But then again we also had improved sleep on valtrex. Valtrex stopped night wakenings completely, and asking to come to our bed etc (night anxiety?), so probably that our kids are completely different .. We all take 5HTP which I think is great, I would recommend that first.

My husband and I, before children, used to sail and we would take phenergen for

sea sickness. I think I only took it a couple of times in severe weather and

it's pretty heavy duty, knocked me out. I didn't even know it was an

anti-histamine, it's a really strong sedative. (Actually the navy, and my

husband, would take this with ephredrine for sea sickness to cancel each other

out but I can't take anything that speeds your heart rate). I remember you had

to be careful in the sunshine when you took it as well. It's very powerful, I

would only recommend this as a last resort and make sure you know all side

effects first. Have you tried other calmers such as gaba or inositol (also good

for OCD)?

5htp can be pricy so i stock up when its on sale. takes 3 days to work and gave me a headache until then, but compare that to the sx of ssris and they might do the opposite and no contest.i havent tried anti histamines does this mean pollen can cause autistic behaviours?alexis

5htp didn't settle eddie at all.

dr g mentioned phenergan last year when eddie was unsettled and it gave us some

respite and some sleep. obviously that doesn't give you a solution as to why

this is going on, but it might let you re-charge your batteries.

i bought mine in local chemist and explained that dr g had recommended it, they

won't give it out without good explanation,
