Hi Kim! I'm Kristi and have just been diagnosed with RA and I am 30. I have

had lactose intolerance too! I never thought about the two being connected, but

you might be right! I never had lactose intolerance before the last year or

so.. makes me wonder if the RA was beginning then. I have tried those

lactaid-type pills to help tolerate it, but it hasn't worked for me. I suppose

when you have your body attacking itself every day, a whole bunch of things

change from what we knew. :(

Take care and let me know if you find anything that works to help!

Lissa,

Blood creatinine levels are an indication of kidney

function. Long term medication can cause damage to

the kidneys. In talking to my doctor, long term

antibiotics can be a problem for your kidneys as can

long term NSAIDS.

Great to hear that the treatment basically " knocked out " the RA

problem. I have a similar history. In 1996 I started having strange

intermittent swelling, mostly in my hand and fingers. At the time,

the blood tests did not show RA or Lyme, I was told to use NSAIDS.

My HMO dr also prevented me from going back to a Rheumatologist for

more tests. I did a lot of reading, and I thought it might be Lyme

disease (had dogs, occasional ticks found, and had a growing pale

pink rash on my thigh that the doctors kept ignoring). So I decided

to try using Tetracycline. I stayed on that (got it for the dogs

online, over the counter) for four months. The rash went away, as

did the strange joint inflamations. Fast forward 9 years later.

Suddenly the joints start flaring up again. Randomly, lasting a

couple of days, excruciating pain. Now I am in a PPO and was able to

see a rheumatologist. He did the blood tests, and diagnosed

PALINDROMIC RHEUMATISM...which is a precursor to RA. For the first

three months, he had me try NSAIDS, which were worthless. By then I

had researced all the info on RA, read books, and changed my diet

(which helped..certain foods definitely affected me more than

others). I went back to him and asked to be put on Minocin. He said

OK, and I started that back in Dec. 2006. Stayed on Minocin, and

gradually lowered the dose to one a day, mon-fri only. Then in

April we switched to Doxcycline. That has continued to keep the

problem at bay. He felt Doxycycline would be less toxic to my

system, as well as a LOT cheaper! Just did some blood tests, all

OK. Testing liver and kidneys to make sure there is no problem. I

hope to be able to get off the meds after a while. (Tried briefly

back in March but the RA came back). How long did you take the

antibiotics? I feel so fortunate to have a Dr. that will prescribe

these meds, as so many want to use the high powered stuff. Anyhow,

knock on wood, I seem to have the villain at bay....

I wasn't aware that you could get high creatinine levels so long after you

stopped the antibiotic, what did the doctor say to do?

Sue,

I am currently having numerous tests of my kidneys,

including an untrasound and a biopsy. I expect to

know more in the new year. Right now I am wondering

if anyone else has noticed this as my doctor said that

the kidney damage might be a result of long term

medication, such as antibiotics. She said that they

can also be damaged by things like long term

anti-inflammatories.

Mouse,

I was on the antibiotics for about 3 1/2 years and

stopped in 2002. So far so good.

Glad to hear that you are doing well too.

That is great. Saw my Dr. yesterday for the quarterly checkup. All

my liver and kidney tests came back solid, and all other pertinent

tests as well. I asked him about the possibility of eventually going

off meds. He is totally thrilled with the fact that the minocin and

doxycycline have WORKED at all! Says he wishes it would work that

well with all his patients! Anyhow, he said that about 20% of those

treated with good results eventually go into complete remission.

However, there was one protein level in my initial lab tests which

he says is an indicator that my system has the predisposition to RA.

We will test for that protein again in six months and see if the

levels have changed any at all...

So, it is day by day for now, I guess. But I don't want to spend the

next 35 years taking antibiotics! That just does not seem healthy

in the long run, no matter how careful I am!
