Guest guest
I posted this to another lapband group I am a member of..it goes to show how docs and staff treat patients. I am going to need your help on this one. Sorry I have not been posting much but I have been sick the past two weeks with a virus. After two weeks I was coughing so bad that I though I lung was going to flying across the room. So I called my primary and went in. Come to find out I have something called post viral syndrome or cytokine storm. Basicly my immune system thinks I still have a virus and is still trying to kill whatever invade my lungs. Since there is nothing there these immune cells are irritating my lungs and its making tons of mucous. The doc explained it to me as if the surface of my lungs is covered with a bad sunburn...very red, inflammed and irritated. This can take up to 12 weeks to heal if left untreated. But because I have auto-immune disease and my immune system is in overdrive it can be fatal for someone like me. The airways in the lungs get clogged up with mucous and you suffocate. So I got a shot of steriods, steriod inhaler, pills for cough and told to double up on my allergy meds. And the remaining normal stuff...lots of fluids and rest. So I called my rheumatologist since this is immune related to see what advice he had. Becuase normallly I have to stop all immune suppressent drugs when sick. I left a message with a fill in receptionist. She seem to have NO medical knowledge. So I sat home ALL day waiting for the doc to call me back. He has his medical assistant call me today to tell me. That this illness is auto-immune related...as well as related to my GASTRIC BYPASS SURGERY!!! I quickly corrected the lady on the phone. I told her the rheumatologist must have me confused with someone else becuase Ihave never had GASTRIC BYPASS surgery. So after I explained that I called to see since this is due to over active immune system should I start my immune supressent drugs? So she explains to me that she did not take the message and that she had no clue what the other lady wrote. She said she would reconfirm the doctors notes and call me back again. I then told her that I had lap-band and that the two surgeries are totally different. My insides have not been cut or re- arranged. I also told her that its pretty sad when so-called medical professionals are so ignorent of the facts and differences between the procedures. So when she called me back...she claims the message was correct and that the doc said there is no difference in the procedures and that part of my problem was cuase from my gastric bypass surgery. I then informed her that I guess I would have to wait until we were face to face to get this issue straight. But again it was really said when so-called trained educated medical professionals make such ignorant statements. I also let her know that my orginal clinic that I came from was hiring a new rheumatologist. So I guess I am stuck with yet another stupid doc until the new doc arrives. It just really burns me up when these docs lump us together with gastric bypass patients!!!! On a good note I found a good family practice doc. Guest guest
Toni, How did your primary decide a virus is responsible for your problems? I'm mystified as to why your rheumatologist would think your current respiratory problems would have anything to do with your lap-band. Not an MD I'll tell you where to go! Guest guest
My Primary said he has seen this before but this year he has seen far more than he has in the past. The fact that I have auto-immune disease and stopped the immune suppresents he was not surprise. He said that healthy people get this all the time and it can last 12 weeks with no treatment. With my auto-immune it will just get worst. Myrheummy says that Gatric bypass patients get this when they are 3-5 yrs out post-op. It comes from something strange happening in the body that triggers auto-immune problems from the cutting and rerouting the the GI tract. He refused to really discuss this with me insisting he was right. I told him I wanted documented proof of this in lapband patients since NONE of my digestion has been cut! He just blew me off. So we have a new rheummy coming to town and I plan to check him out.
