Guest guest
Hi My son is 10 years old and has a lot of trouble in writing stories. He has very good and creative ideas but he comes right out of the plan and involves things that don't make sense as story progresses. Have you had similar problem with your child? Any idea on how to help him to keep to plan and write independently? Many thanks in advance. Vilma

Guest guest
I think an inability to stick to a storyline (such as an adult would view a storyline) is in part just a byproduct of being a child :-) I wouldn't want to stifle a kid's imagination. Some things I've done with younger kids: Tell the story only verbally at first, and take notes on post-it notes or something similar. The notes would be very succint, just a word or two or a quick drawing. Then go over the story again, following the post notes, and tossing any that you can agree are interesting/funny/cool but don't add to the actual main story. This is something kids would learn over a long period of time, so don't expect results right away. Also be prepared to use some of the interesting/funny/cool ideas that must be discarded in another way, or even as a basis for a brand new story better than the original. It can also help to go at it in a similar manner, but from a different angle. Instead of focusing on plot, focus on character and setting. So, establish those, write them down on sticky notes again, and the rule then becomes only those are allowed in the story. So, there are characters X, Y, and Z, they live in this specific place which consists of a garden, and the story happens Tuesday night. Nothing else is allowed. Have these right in front of your son and when he starts talking about character A, point out the sticky notes, where there is no character A. Guest guest
Hi, My son would 'lose the thread' as it were and reading back over what he'd written would help him keep on track - just like I sometimes need to do!
