Guest guest
My son can at times be very empathetic but many times will also laugh when someone (even me) gets hurt. He sounds alot like this but is turing 7 tomorrow so I have no idea what is age and what is not. I would definately get a good evaluation and see what they think. > > I am wondering if my 11 yod who has ocd and gad also has aspergers. She " get " things, like on tv or what we are talking about. Things she should understand but doesn't. It is kind of hard to explain. But it happens a lot and is very annoying. She has a hard time relating to others, doesn't seem to care or understand why we are upset about something, not empathetic, laughs when her cousin gets hurt. Is always loud when she talks. Clumsy, doesn't recognize verbal and nonverbal cues, stares. takes things literally. Says things that are inappropriate. Totally obsessed with MASH the tv show. Watches it to help her calm down the same shows over and over and over again. Some learning problems. This is some of them. I am going to talk to her therapist about it tomorrow. It just seems like a piece of the puzzle is missing or something. >
Guest guest
From your description, I'd look into it. Question - about TV, conversation, she does or doesn't " get " them? I recall having to explain things for when he was young during TV shows. (he has Aspergers) > > I am wondering if my 11 yod who has ocd and gad also has aspergers. Guest guest
My daughter, 9 years old, is similar. She can repeat a joke to make others laugh, but then says " I don't get it " ...fairly amusing, but she feels left out for sure. She doesn't understand cliche's at all, or riddles. She has been diagnosed with GAD and OCD, and was evaluated for Aspergers. It was a lengthy questionnaire that each parent and her teacher had to fill out from the neuropsych she saw. While both us parents scored her as " highly likely " to have Aspergers, her teacher at the time scored her " unlikely " . But then again, last year she wasn't haven't problems in school. Â This year has been another story completely. She also has a new teacher, so we are going to repeat the evaluation process. Definitely get it evalulated as a possibility, it just helps to know exactly what you're looking at and dealing with. in WI Subject: aspergers To: Date: Sunday, February 28, 2010, 6:36 PM Â I am wondering if my 11 yod who has ocd and gad also has aspergers. Guest guest
Sounds like a lot of classic symptoms. Interestingly, those with AS or on the autistic spectrum lack the ability to see themselves the way others do or to understand how their behavior affects others 9called theory of mind). There is a social skills book by Jed Baker that demonstrates how these kids can benefit from pictures explain social stories (social exchanges) better than trying to explain it verbally. Temple Grandin (autism expert) also explains the p[henomena of " talking in pictures " . If you can remember this, you have a good tool to use in educating your child. My son attended social skills training by a therapist in Baker's group and it was very helpful. I'd recommend looking into social skills training.
