Thanks for all that Anita, you really are such a supportive person.

We are in the middle of an FBA this weekend and will probably be better placed to make decisions when we see the outcome.

Everything happening at once, have our copy of paed letter referring to Maudsley this am also, mixed emotions on that one, describes our care as utmost dedication but also states "assumed" pain, "assumed OCD" and "assumed" tic disorder, also refers to schools "highly specialised and defined curriculum" eek, that won't work well at funding discussions, never mind, nothing like an extra mountain to climb, lol. Wittering now but can't help reading the utmost dedication to mean despite everything, sigh!

Re: proloquotogo

Well, I can tell you why I think we've been successful to smoe degree with it. In starting to use it, K was only required to mand for things he adored. So, there would only be about 4 choices and even those would change so that he didn't get bored with them. Over time he has learned to like more things (I myself am stunned by this as for a long time our experience had been that he only like about 5 things. These would change and something adored on Monday would be nothing to him Tuesday). I think CEASE is helping with that, emphasis on the think.

Anyway, the proloquo is used mostly in therapeutic settings as it is harder to use in real life at the beginning. We used it on iPad at the start, as it is easier to see and touch, but now he has an iPod on a lanyard to keep around his neck. I highly recommend getting an iPod or iPad with a camera, as then you can add pictures instead of relying just on the icons provided by the program itself. DS uses a mix of icons and photos, but IMO the photos are easier to understand and more motivating.

For me the best part of the program is that a person cannot outgrow it and you can adapt it on the spot, even a computer numpty like me can. Right now, ds has realized that if you want a special youtube video you can type in a command and get them. I do the typing but he holds my hand very carefully as I say the letters. I really do think that for him this is one of the most motivating ways to learn how to spell.

I agree entirely that no device, etc is useful if the person has no desire to communicate. This has been an issue with ds and we were very lucky to find a therapist who is amazing in that way--she is very playful with ds and he really enjoys therapy with her.

If the school is wanting to use it, would they be sending home the device for use at home too? Our school won't, but I had bought proloquo2go about 16 months before they got into it. I think using it at home for stuff that really rewards him would be key.

Happy to chat about it some time on teh phone if you want :-)
