Guest guest
Ellen, Don't panic.. There has got to be something you can do. Are you up for Naturopathy? I personally know of powerful herbs that can be used for safe withdrawal of meds. Whether or not they can be used during pg I do not know, but if you are serious about this I can put you in touch with a very skilled D.NP that can help you. I'm not 100% better, but I'm SO much better than I was and I owe much of it to her. My OBGYN is the one who hooked me up with my D. NP because of my CFS and Hashimoto's Disease. If you are seriously interested please e-mail me off list. Also, you must know that she is not covered under insurance. Deep breaths - You WILL be ok. -Wendi Ellen Scusa <eascusa@...> wrote: Iam in desperate need of help and advise. Guest guest
Hi Ellen, I hope that someone here can help. But also want say that the issues of chronic pain and problems with meds and withdrawal are so common today, that I bet there are some good pain/med forums with tons of info and patients' experience. I'm just positive that there are others who have faced this pregnancy/pain/med dilemma. Probably even with CFS/FM, tho some may be without those dx. I don't know exactly where to direct you tho, except to google or search under . Maybe the Fibromyalgia forums would be the closest thing to start. But just under " pain " , " narcotics withdrawal " , or something might help. Is there a pain clinic near you? They might be a resource. Helen, here, knows about Benzo forums, so she might have some ideas. I don't have this experience, so can't be specific, but I just know you are not alone. I'm really sorry your MDs are not being more helpful. But if you find other guidance, they might kick back in with support. Best wishes, Katrina > > Iam in desperate need of help and advise. Guest guest
Wow Ellen, That is quite a challenge. This is a research list and not a support group. However, I have been on and gotten off most of those types of meds, and I used two strategies. So I will share some information about that, in the interest of CFS research ... First, I titrated the doses slowly down, and did NOT go cold turkey. I tried cold turkey once with a sedative, and it caused actual physical harm to my stomach, I got acid burns from the sudden disequalibrium. Will never do that again... And second, I found natural supplements or therapies to help replace the effects of the medication as needed. The usual titration method for the psychotropic drugs antidepressants, seditives, some pain meds, etc.) is to set a target time-frame such as one or two months, then lower the dose weekly, or if you can tolerate it, every few days. Then stay at the lowered dose until you are stable, and lower again, until you are off. With just a week of meds, maybe you can stretch those doses through titration to 2-4 weeks. But I think it would be best to get a little more supply if possible, becasue sometimes the titration takes a bit longer than expected. Maybe if you tell your doctors you are going to titrate off the medication they will be willing to give you a short prescription with lower doses to help you through that. As you are weaning off the med, I would start using some good alternative treatments to help compensate for what you are missing. Natural herbal teas can be helpful. St 's wart helps some people with depression, or Chamomille tea for sedation, Kava kava for relaxation, and there are many others including essential oils. But you need to research the natural treatments to make sure they are safe with pregnancy. Also, emotional therapies might be important, binaural beat CDs can be powerful ways to re-learn relaxation skills, and some meditations can help with pain. I found getting off the beta blocker (for hypertension) was helped by eliminating food allergies. My doctor figured that out for me, and had me take an ELIA-ACT test for IgA food allergies. When I removed the 16 foods I am allergic to, the BP was more under control. I also went on an all-organic and natural foods diet and I believe that also helped the BP. Being pregnant is an interesting challenge during withdrawal, probably a lot of rest will be required. And a few good friends to call or visit when you need encouragement. Also, if you are not already supplementing with EFAs, B vitamines, and a good multi, that might be very important. Finding natural analgesics might be more challenging. Salt has a mild analgesic effect, I have used salt/c quite a lot, and although that comes with some herx type of reaction at times, sometimes it gives extra adrenal energy and lowers general pain levels. Which reminds me, supporting the adrenals may also be very important during this time. A good adrenal support multi or supplement should be helpful. I hope you find a way to get through this, I know that the pregnant body seems very vulnerable but also is very resilient... Good luck! --Kurt > > Iam in desperate need of help and advise. Guest guest
You should seek a neurologist who specializes in pain management. There is a good one here in Dallas, and if I knew what city you were in, I might be able to get a referral for you. In the meantime, you can google up Krusz or Claude Krusz and find out which organizations he is affiliated with and try to find a doctor that way. I doubt if you are the first pregnant woman who needs pain medication. My wife got demerol while she was in labor, so I doubt that you would do any permanent damage to your baby if you continued taking some form of pain med-you just need to find the right one. Also, call the neurologist before you make an appointment to make sure they are knowledgable about pain meds and pregnancy. It is important to find a doc w/ experience in this area. Guest guest
I don't know what in the world I would do in this situation. But maybe you could get some help from your pharmacist about which of the meds would be most problematic when just dropped suddenly. Then maybe you could threaten to sue the doctors for malpractice for deserting you like this. Hang in there. Maybe someone else can offer some advice. Guest guest
Ellen, I believe there is a spiritual dimension to life, and the fact that you became pregnant means that life itself is saying 'yes'to you and so is your body, so I believe that you can help yourself. You *do* need an understanding doctor. A woman I know stayed on antidepressants for her panic disorder while pregnant and has a healthy happy first baby. Kurt's advice on water titration is very wise. I'm doing water titration off a sleeping pill, very slowly. It will not upset your body as much. There is a group for titrating off benzodiazpenes via water titration, but it could be applied to any pill. It allows you to go down by very small easy increments. > > Iam in desperate need of help and advise. Guest guest
Gosh! I am so sorry to hear of your situation. It struck me that maybe a doc who treats drug addicts might be more likely to know what to do. Instead of an OB. They must see women in your situation sometimes. It's hard to believe they want you to cold turkey off all that stuff at once. That itself puts you and baby at risk. Try a drug rehab place for a referall. If you have some kind of public clinic.... Guest guest
Sorry to hear of your situation. Are you saying they are taking off all the meds that are making you comfortable? You might want to find a naturopath Dr. who treat FM. Some do. They have supplements that can help. Also watch you diet. Eat a low carb diet. Epson salt bath soaks are good. Magnesium Malate. Take it easy. Try to keep down the stress. Rest every day. Stress makes FM worse. Hope you get help soon. Gail Ellen Scusa wrote: > > Iam in desperate need of help and advise. Guest guest
I think that in your position I would go into the ER of best hospital your insurance will cover, and tell them that you've been on all these meds, now your pregnant and about to run out of meds. Your doctors won't help you wean off slowly so you and your baby need to be medicaly supervised while you get off the meds and get stable. In the hospital they have to understand the importance of what you are about to be going through. I also agree that you should get a lawyer to deal with your other doctors. Their so afraid of being responsible for the damage to your baby that their refusal to treat you has placed you and your baby in a position where your going where your both being harmed. If you can find a hospital with a rheumy on staff. I've been to several different hospitals lately and out of three only one had dotors who were really knowlegeable about RA and the meds. Althout any doctor will understant the importance fo the withdrawl from the meds on a pregnant woman, and the dangers to the baby. So I think the hospital is the best thing to try for now. Later you'll need to consult specialist to see if there has been any damage to the baby, and have a doctor put you on replacement meds for the cource of the pregnancy. But my advice is to take this one step at a time and just focus on getting yourself and your baby into a safe environment where you are under a doctors supervition while you get off the meds and get yourself and the baby stableized. > > Iam in desperate need of help and advise. Guest guest
If this were me, I would write a synopsis of my medical history, list the drugs, their doses and the doctors prescribing them. Then, I would cite the recommendations of each of the doctors seen during this pregnancy. I would then make a request for immediate help for SAFE withdrawal and ask what the likelyhood is of damage to the foetus at this stage of gestation. I would also be asking why birth contro failed. I would then FAX this synopsis to each of the prescribing doctors and also to those involved more recently re the pregnancy. I would begin to immediately keep records of my state of being, all communication from health professionals and etc. I would also subscribe to the Orthomolecular group and ask for help there. Some very knowledgeable folks there. mjh " The Basil Book " _http://foxhillfarm.us/FireBasil/_ (http://foxhillfarm.us/FireBasil/) From: " Ellen Scusa " <_eascusa@..._ (mailto:eascusa@...) > <_@CFSFMExperimCFS_ (mailto: ) > Sent: Friday, September 15, 2006 12:23 AM Subject: I'm pregnant and on pain medicine and no Dr. will help me! > Iam in desperate need of help and advise. Guest guest
Hello Ellen, As a former drug and alcoholism counselor I can offer some resources for you. Please don't think I'm suggesting you are addicted to medicine, quite the contrary. However, the type of physician you need is one who treats addiction and withdrawal from the medicines you are on. I found a forum monitored by a physician http://www.medhelp.org/forums/addiction/index.htm You might want to go there and see what resources are available. The other suggestion is to call the local inpatient centers for addiction and ask for the name of the medical director who will be an addiction specialist, then look him/her up and see if they have a private practice in the area. Also you may want to do more research on the internet. But definitely the type of physician you need is an addiction medicine specialist. I am so sorry for the ignorance on the part of the physician's with whom you have sought help. Unfortunately, it is VERY common for physicians to be ignorant in this area of practice. Good Luck and let us know how things work out. Peace, River
Guest guest
Ellen, If you have one, have you contacted your insurer and asked for help? Perhaps a methadone clinic near you can help you or, at least, direct you to someone who can assist you. As suggested, a trip to the ER might work. My prayers are with you. Guest guest
St 's wort is not benign. It was a neurotoxin for me. Gave me seizure like symptoms as do some AD. Keep looking for a Dr. who can help you. Do you have a Rhuematologist or someone who specializes in CFS, FM. Even a Psychiatrist would be able to tritrate you off the meds. It seems like a gyno would be able to tell which meds are the safest to take. Guest guest
I don't know if this thread is finished, but I was looking at an old Guide to Prescription Drug book that I have and I thought I would pass along some info. Oxycodone, codeine and methadone studies indicate that use during pregnancy is tentative as far as the effects on the fetus. However, the book says use during the last 6 weeks of pregnancy can cause withdrawal symptoms in the baby. It would be good if someone had a more recent prescription drug reference book. Mine is 13 years old. However, I would use no herbs or supplements that have not been fully tested. After thinking that Kava kava, melatonin and a few others were effective w/ no side effects, we found out the hard way that there were serious negative side effects. Also, the truth is that there are some members of this list are advocates of non prescription drug remedies, unfortunately, there haven't been any proper studies on these herbs/supplements.
