Guest guest
It depends on how coopertative he is and how well prepared the EEG dept is. Our first attempt in 2010 failed because a) they only gave a little melatonin which failed to send him to sleep, just made him grumpy b)they had no dedicated waiting area, just a few chairs in a corridor c) they were late d) the EEG was delayed becasue the doc refused to prescribe any more melatonin e) we didn't have our ABA tutor with us. The second attempt - no melatonin, no waiting, and ABA tutor with us - a success of sorts, apparently. If the EEG is a failure, ask to be referred to the Neville Childhood Epilepsy Centre. Guest guest
I think you have to try and if it doesn't go well make a plan after, Sam's teacher has a mock up kit they can practice on over several months. I thought we did't have a hope in hell but after they managed a CT with school staff (A & E bumped head during seizure) I said book it and ask same staff member to go we did and it was done, hurrah for Vicky, HTLA in Sam's class Mandi x Hello, all.Do you have any advice on preparing for an electroencephalogram to ensure it goes smoothly? We were told to give Loic melatonin an hour before the test, but he's pretty hyperactive, so I'm wondering if that will be enough and if there's anything else that I can do.Thanks in advance for sharing your experiences. Guest guest
And having just read Margarets reply, key with older bigger kids is get somebody else they are usually having to be good for or perform for to go with em, I didn;t even go in! Guest guest
When my son had his we were told to keep him up late and wake him up early the night before so that he was tired when he arrived. I made him a social story so he knew what to expect. I think I still have it so could email it to you for you to adapt for your son if that would help? He didnt go to sleep but he did lie still which gave them enough of a reading to make a decision. x > > Hello, all. > > Do you have any advice on preparing for an electroencephalogram to ensure it goes smoothly? > > We were told to give Loic melatonin an hour before the test, but he's pretty hyperactive, so I'm wondering if that will be enough and if there's anything else that I can do. > > Thanks in advance for sharing your experiences. >
Guest guest
When we had this done we kept our son awake and obviously ourselves the whole night before, I'm not sure if you can request if practical a 24 hour eeg where you take a unit home with you, most kids probably won't put up with this but might be worth asking and trying as it is likely to be more conclusive. Guest guest
I personally don't think its worth doing if you need Melatonin or any other sedation, it affects the patterns if the child is sedated. Why is he having the EEG? Guest guest
The hospital sent us a social story which we read loads of times with him. We expected the absolute worst but when we got there they popped on a DVD and he was a star. Confidence of staff is key with Tom. Discovered absolutely nothing mind, he's had two seizures since despitte EEG being crystal clear. Good luck! > > > > Hello, all. > > >
