ive been confused about logging activities on fitbit.com and think i may have told michelle the wrong thing about it ...

Yeah, I started using the activity log as well and I like that I can put in the exact workout I did, but the calorie burn and steps are so off. I usually just go by the list and pick something from that and log it that way. The numbers appear to look closer, but it doesn't tell you your steps, it just tells you your calorie burn.

I've compared my calorie burn on my fitbit to my HRM and they are quite a bit different. I wear my HRM for my workouts and use that number for what I burned just for that workout. At the end of the day the fitbit gives you a total, according to their numbers. Who knows if all of that is right, but the main thing I focus on is my steps and distance. I like to use my HRM for my workouts because I think it's more accurate. Don't as me why, but I think it is.

Question...can you see my activities when you go to my page? I edited a few things there so I wasn't sure. I haven't logged my workouts there in a few days. I keep forgetting.

yes, ive come to realize that the calorie burn that fitbit.com

calculates will be wrong for alot of my video workouts.

however, the steps that the fitbit itself counts should be

correct. it is after all a pedometer and it does do that well.

> I usually just go by the list and pick

> something from that and log it that way. The numbers appear to

when you create that manual log entry, the calories that you

specify (as per your HRM) will over-ride the calorie count

calculated by fitbit.com for that time period (based on steps

taken). this is the correct thing to do for all workouts...

except i dont bother wearing my HRM when i go walking, or when i

do deli max.

the number of steps that the fitbit counted during your workout

will not be changed by your manual entry.. it is an accurate

count of the steps you took during the time period in question

and should not be changed.

there is only two reasons to over-ride the number of steps

counted by the fitbit... you forgot to wear it or it ran out of

charge. you do this by creating a manual log entry of WALKING

or RUNNING (no matter what you really did) - this will let you

enter an estimate of both cal burn and steps taken for a certain

time period.

>the main thing I

> focus on is my steps and distance.

i really enjoy having a step goal and trying to achieve it every

day. some days i do great, some not as good, but it is still

fun. just having any kind of pedometer helps so much in being

active.

i also like the floors (of stairs) goals in the ultra version.

im trying to get to 50 in one day but so far can only get 25...lol.

>I like to use my HRM for my

> workouts because I think it's more accurate.

oh definitely!!! heart rate is a much better way to measure cal

burn than some formula based on steps taken... but really they

are all good, anything to get us (and keep us) moving :)

btw, i was looking at my fitbit... looking for cracks like you

have. i see that there is a man-made groove in the top of the

fitbit, looks like it is supposed to help stop cracking at the

very top. does your model have that? or is it something they

have done to the ultra as an improvement... hmmm.

did you contact them and send them the pics of the cracks? i

hope so... and that you told that you want a new ultra as a

replacement!

Yes, I did contact them and they emailed me back letting me know that they would replace it. I didn't think to ask for the ultra until my husband told me to. I never did email them back until just now when seeing your post lol. So I just emailed them and asked for the ultra. I hope they haven't already shipped the other one out.

Thanks for the reminder. :)

When I log in my volleyball time (If I remember to do it) I just use the pre-set calorie rating for the activity because I can't wear my fitbit and play volleyball. If I'm doing an exercise dvd then I start and stop my fitbit but I don't change the workout log on the fitbit because I feel why bother since I log it into my exercise spreadsheet AND into myfitnesspal.com....it has pre-set calorie burns and you can also set up your own. ive been confused about logging activities on fitbit.com and

think i may have told michelle the wrong thing about it ...

if im doing a step-based workout, i press the button and set a

recording for the duration, to create an activity RECORD on the

website. i then edit the record to say what the activity was.

(ie: walking, climbing stairs, hiking, step aerobics, floor

aerobics, deli work, heavy housework)

but because i am using fitbit.com to track calorie burn vs

intake, and using its advice as to how much to eat, then i will

have to manually over-ride the website's calorie burn calculation

for the duration of the workout by creating an activity LOG.

(ie: rebounding, weights, cardio+sculpt, power yoga, elliptical,

core, wii sports, kickbox, snow shovelling, raking... workouts

where you are exerting yourself in some other means than moving

your feet, and getting a higher calorie burn than the fitbit

calculates)

the website does have a database of activities, and associated

calorie burns, that i can select from to create the log entry,

but i dont trust it. (i also do not trust its food database)

so i still press the button on the fitbit to record the workout,

but i will also have to

drag out my old polar HRM and start wearing it during

non-step-based workouts. then create the activity log,

over-riding the calorie burn with what the HRM says.

one doesnt have to press the fitbit's button for this, but it

helps to have the exact start time of the workout because you

will be asked for it.

i dont know how this affects what you do on myfitnesspal, but i

thought i would mention it just in case.

i hope that my HRM has a working battery! i will wear it for

a while and compare it to the fitbit estimation and see what the

differences are.

Just press and hold the button on the fitbit until you see start/stop then release. I wear it sleeping and track that by turning it on and off at night and then in the morning. Just press and hold the button on the fitbit until you see start/stop then release.

I thought that was only for sleep. So if you push down and it says "start" it will register your steps still?

> *I thought that was only for sleep. So if you push down and it

> says " start " it will register your steps still?***

it is for sleep but also to mark the start and stop of any activity.

whenever you press and hold the button, it creates an activity

record until you press and hold the button again to stop the timer.

if you were sleeping during that time, the activity record is

changed to being a sleep record.

but, if you were getting steps during that time, the activity

record sits on your activity log page for you.

i time my deli work, walks and workouts... so after doing one

of those, i go and change the name of the activity record to say

what i was doing during that slice of time and it shows me that i

burned x cals and took x steps while i was doing it.

you can mark various chunks of your day... say i go for a walk so

i start/stop for that. then later i go to work so again i

start/stop. then i do a video workout and again start/stop.

when i sync my fitbit to the website, all three of those

activities show up as three different activity records, showing

me how much of the total cals and steps i accomplished during

each one.

Of all this time having this thing I had no idea you could do that. So if you start and stop it will it still tell your total steps/distance at the end of the day?Btw, they emailed me back and.said they were sending me the ultra. :). So I want to see how different it is compared to my old one. ~~ Sent from my Verizon Wireless 4GLTE smartphone----- Reply message -----To: <exercisevideos >Subject: logging fitbit activitiesDate: Thu, Feb 16, 2012 7:20 pm > *I thought that was only for sleep. yes, all steps are still counted and added to final totals.

fantastic!!! one thing that is different is it will tell you

how many floors of stairs that you climb each day. also, when

you hold the button, it doesnt just say start and stop anymore...

instead a stopwatch function is also shown and you can see

exactly how long the timer has been going for. also a clock

has been added to the display. oh, one more thing you can do is

put a personal greeting on it... so mine will display random

stuff like 'hello carolyn'... or 'way to go carolyn'... or 'lets

go carolyn'.

Wow, that has a lot more on it then I thought. So now I have to decide on whether to keep using my old one until it quits or go ahead and use the new one. My old one works fine, but just has the cracks, which hasn't effected it at all. ~~ Sent from my Verizon Wireless 4GLTE smartphone----- Reply message -----To: <exercisevideos >Subject: logging fitbit activitiesDate: Thu, Feb 16, 2012 8:47 pm > So if you start and stop it will it still tell your total> steps/distance at the end of the day?yes, all steps are still counted and added to final totals.> Btw, they emailed me back and.said they were sending me the> ultra. :).
