Guest guest
My experience with Azulfidine (sulfasalzine) was somewhat different. I started out with 500 mg in the morning and 500 at night for a week, then went to 500 mg three times a day, and finally 1000 mg morning and night. My feet felt somewhat better but not nearly as good as they did on the MTX. My reaction was largely intestinal, having 6 or 8 really urgent bowel movements every day with an accompanying flare of hemorrhoids and bleeding. This is a paradoxical drug reaction since the drug was causing the very symptoms it is usually prescribed to relieve. This made it difficult to work but when I mentioned these side effects to my doctor, she just rolled her eyes and shook her head like she always does. She suggested I cut back to 2 tablets per day and try again to work up to a therapeutic dose. I was already not taking the drug on weekends because my weekend job doesn't allow for such frequent bathroom breaks. But when my last set of labs came back showing frank anemia I took myself off the drug and feel so much better. So for now I'm using evening primrose oil per Gillian's suggestion, and my joints feel no worse. The doctor, of course, has labeled me " non-compliant with therapy " . For those who say, just find another doctor you like - I only wish. The insurance company has far more say over who I see than I do. I did switch to another doctor in the same practice and maybe he will have a startling different approach, but I'm not holding my breath! Guest guest
It is an easy (if you aren't allergic to Sulfur) on the body DMARD that only works in about 1/3rd of PA sufferers. I am sure it can cause anemia, but for me I stayed pretty much the same.
Guest guest
I took it for a short time but had to stop it. As with others, I can't remember why, just that I did. I know that's no help to you, but it's history... Dennis in Eastexas " It's not Rocket Surgery " [ ] azulfidine > Hello, > I was forced to stop[ plaquenal due to allergic reactions.
