I struggled with Yoga because I am stiff and I can't move my body that way.

I danced from age 3 to age 14, traditional dance, and even after all of that

I was never able to bend down and touch below my knees. I became frustrated

trying to do the poses.

I like swimming though and find it easier to move in the water. Just me

anyway.

Yoga for your daughters?

Hi Group,

I'm getting certified as a Yoga teacher and I'm trying to bring Yoga to

my daughter and her classmates. I've been slowly teaching my certain

poses, breathing, and relaxation, trying to make it accessible and fun, and

tomorrow I'm going into her class to do a group for her and her six

classmates, all

on the Autism spectrum.

Has anyone had any experiences with Yoga and their kids? Any feedback at

all?

Thanks,

Melinda

I know 3 autistic people (me included) who do yoga. One friend, it's

her sole form of exercise...another credits yoga with saving his

sanity. I do it as an adjunct when I can't do gymnastics-I have to be

a little careful because I have ehlers-danlos syndrome, aka " rubberman

syndrome " and too much stretching without strength training =

dislocations. But it's quite enjoyable.

I've also had personal and teaching experience with gymnastics and

dance for autistics. It was good for ALL my students, and built my

self concept (since these all 'feel' like they're in the same general

family I thought I'd throw that out there).

Thanks Kassiane and for the posts. The yoga class went well! I did

some simple warm ups to gentle music and then modified the poses and had the

kids pretend to be animals--cat stretch (they said Meow, downward dog pose,

( " woof " ), in Cobra the hissed like snakes. We " made shapes " with our

bodies...triangle, moon, sun. And most of them did really quite well in final

relaxation.

I was really pleased, and the teacher said she wants to make it a regular part

of class, maybe once a month. Next week I have a space in a Yoga Studio and

I'll be teaching three girls, ages 12-14, all on the spectrum including my

daughter.

Thanks again,

Melinda
